Depending on where you're coming from, your flight to Mexico could be a breeze or it could drag on forever. Here are some handy hints that will help you start your next great adventure on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Travelling on a plane can be a comfortable experience if you've got all the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a fresh set of clothes and a good book. Next, find a spot in your hand luggage for your mobile phone, a charger, medications and perhaps a proper neck pillow as well. Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Put all your full-sized bottles of hair gel and hairspray in your checked luggage. Any liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) will be confiscated by security. • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can pose a risk on long-haul flights. It's the result of blood clotting due to poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression tights or socks.

• First things first. Your passport and travel documents will need to be shown to airport security. Have them easily accessible to avoid fumbling around for them.
