Wherever you're coming from, flying can be a seamless experience if you prepare well enough. We've made a list of handy travel tips that will help get your Octon escape started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The trick to having an amazing flight experience is to pack in advance. Start with the essentials: passport, travel docs, cash and vital medications. Next, bring on board items that'll help keep you occupied, like your laptop or a few magazines. It's also smart to pack your chargers, a quality neck pillow and a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. Finally, don't forget to toss in toiletry items like a toothbrush, cleansing wipes and a spare change of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have sharp or pointed objects hiding in the bottom of your hand luggage. Other prohibited items include explosive or flammable products, such as fuel and matches, and liquids and gels in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an airplane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer up with comfortable clothing and choose shoes that are closed-toe, flat and easy to slip on and off.
• You're probably aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To minimize your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and keep your feet and legs moving.

• Can't travel without your favourite cologne? No problem. As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-lock bag, it's OK to bring with you in your carry-on.
• There's a good chance you'll be asked to remove your shoes for scanning, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a clever idea.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
