We've got the lowdown on how to make your flight as pain-free as possible. Follow our tips and you'll be breezing through airport security and enjoying Post Falls in no time flat. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be a cruisy experience if you take the right gear. First things first, you'll need toiletry items, such as deodorant, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a spare set of clothes and a good book. Secondly, leave space in your hand luggage for your laptop, a charger, medications and perhaps a neck pillow as well. Last, but definitely not least, remember to bring your passport, travel docs and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of restricted items can differ between airlines, the general rule to follow is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes tools, metal cutlery, spray paint and flares. Sporting equipment like hockey sticks, and objects that could harm passengers, such as swords and batons, aren't allowed in the cabin either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your priority is to be as comfortable as you can. Opt for a pair of slip-on shoes, dress in loose, natural fibers and don't forget to bring a jacket in case it gets chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to walk around the cabin and stretch your legs or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

The trick is to be well prepared before you get to airport security. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Post Falls in a flash. Follow these helpful tips and get your holiday off to a fantastic start:

• Security personnel first need to know that you have a valid ID and matching boarding pass before you can proceed any further. Have them ready to show.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your jacket, belt, keys and other items in your pocket, like your headphones, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Remove liquids and gels from your carry-on bag. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each item should be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on shoes are usually not.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
