If you're not prepared, airports and flying can be overwhelming. But don't hit the panic button just yet. Follow these handy tips for a pleasant start to your getaway in Valley. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Air travel can be a great experience if you've got all the right stuff. First things first, you'll need toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare pair of socks and a good book. Secondly, make room in your hand luggage for your phone and charger, your important medications and maybe a proper neck pillow as well. Lastly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel papers and some cash.

• Double-check that you don't have sharp or pointed objects hiding in one of the compartments of your hand luggage. Other restricted items include explosive or flammable goods, such as aerosol cans and bleach, and liquids and gels in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your main concern when deciding what to wear during your flight. Loose, breathable clothing is a wise choice, as are flat, enclosed shoes.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by lengthy periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Make a point of walking around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

Being prepared before you get to the airport will make your getaway to Valley a piece of cake. We've rounded up some top tips for a swift journey past security:

• Have your ID and boarding pass close by. They'll be the first things you'll be asked to show at airport security.
• The X-ray machine comes next. Empty your pockets and remove anything metal that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes things like earphones or headphones, as well as heavy coats or jackets. They'll all need to go on the X-ray conveyor belt.

• Any gels or liquids, such as perfume or toothpaste, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• Lightweight sneakers are a great footwear choice as you're less likely to be asked to remove them when passing through security. Hiking boots and other bulky shoes are often subjected to extra screening.
• Airlines will not allow any pocket knives or other sharp items in the cabin. If you must bring these kinds of items, pack them in your checked luggage.
