• It's simple — first, pack your passport, important documents, credit cards and medications. Next, you'll want some in-flight entertainment to while away the hours. A thrilling novel and a phone filled with your favourite movies are good options. If you intend to catch a few z's, a neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also be useful. Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) hiding in one of the zippers of your hand luggage. Other banned items include explosive or flammable goods, such as aerosol cans and fuel, and liquids and gels in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim is to be as comfortable as possible. Choose flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, natural fibers and remember to take a sweater in case you get chilly in the cabin.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Try to wander around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to improve your circulation.

• Airport security personnel first need to make sure that you have a valid ID and matching boarding pass before anything else. Have them ready to show.
