This quirky Victorian style property is a great place to stay. As a solo traveller I felt safe & staff were attentive. The continental breakfast was good with a wide selection of self service items on offer. You do need to be aware that the trains ‘toot’ as they go past and some are quite long but the hotel does supply ear plugs & using them I wasn’t bothered by the noise. All in all more of an old fashioned, individual stay rather than a corporate experience. I loved it!

Very nice old hotel with great staff and fantastic weather. The hotel had a great bar and staff. Nice view of the river and trains. Walkable to the train station,New Marina, Swed Coffee shop & others. When I say trains I mean trains. A train lovers dream for the activity. The swing bridge over the Mississippi is very cool.

What a delightful stay! The hotel is beautifully appointed. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Loved being near the river and train depot. I’ll stay here again.

There used to be a great restaurant on site but it's closed and local options are mostly fast foods. The breakfast is microwave your own and all meat based. Staff doesn’t clean/refresh room the entire stay, which some people might prefer. Temperature was hard to regulate. But hearing the trains was fun. Simple Table is a nice 5 table restaurant nearby.

What is there to no like there but just to enjoy everything about this place and location....we didn't plan this place but found it through googling and tripadvior. So glad we did and had a wonderful time unexpectedly. Great views of Mississippi River that is walking distance for early morning stroll to see eagles and other birds plus nearby coffee cafe which was another bonus treat for visitors. The Irish pub that was recommened by friendly front desk lady was great local pub. We will definitely go back. IT's kind of place where you will always talk about because it left you that feeling of wanting to go back.

I happened to chose a night when the water heater broke and hot or lukewarm water couldn't be guaranteed. Antique charm with history so do not look for luxuries of pillow top mattress or fridge in the room. No view as windows were all iced over.

Great Place to Stay!
I was unsure what our stay would be like because I had never been to Fort Madison and we were there for my daughters barrel racing. I was so easy to get to, so easy to get in and were immediately greeted by staff and shown to our room. The room was better than expected. It smelled clean and was temp ready. The shower was amazing water pressure, the beds were very comfortable and our view was the river. There is a train right outside but was not too loud and not too often. Checkout was easy as leaving our door open. Breakfast is small but sufficient. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone.

It is in a unique location and I felt safe. A little train noise through the night, but not unbearable. The room was provided with a sound machine and ear plugs (we didn't us). Breakfast was OK, nothing special. The coffee was not strong enough for me. We had a T.V., but apparently was having issues and not working. Good thing we had a very busy day and it was only one night, so it was not a big deal for us.

This is one beautiful property. Greeted by the friendly staff, was showed to our large clean room and given a token for a free drink in the lounge. Bed was comfortable. TV was great with quality picture and lots of channel choices. We had a nice view of the river and the fort, Breakfast was continental with quality options. Lounge had lots of cool decor and had museum quality items. If you like trains you will love it. Don't worry, even though it is right next to the tracks you barely hear them. Can't wait to go back again!

Great experience. The hotel manager called me after booking to get me into a better/cooler room during a heat wave. The hotel overlooks the Mississippi River and adjacent railroad tracks. The windows appear to have extra soundproofing so that very little train noise comes through.

Across the street from a train station and horn
The hotel decor is very nice, themed out in a victorian style. Very well done. What wasn't noted is it's across the street from a train station that blows it's horn 24 hrs/ day/night. Ear plugs and a white noise maker were provided. The carpeted floor was so stained and blackened that I did not want to walk barefoot. The window ac unit was just boarded up into the window and the putty was very sloppy around the ac unit.This room needs to not be rented out until new flooring and fixing of a couple things are completed. There was just a real lack of thoroughness by housekeeping. Only shampoo bottle and lotion, no conditioner. No-one on site at arrival at 10pm. The answering service did answer promptly and gave a code to get into the hotel. Breakfast was descent but sausage muffins were frozen rock solid to microwave, and the waffle batter was prepoured into foam cups that had also been frozen and dethawed. The pre-hard boiled eggs tasted old. The large muffins were very yummy though. If you're okay with the train horn, this hotel has a great look, just needs some refining.

I guess I should have expected it beings the building was so old, but the a/c was basically broken. I spent the evening in an 82 degree room. Very uncomfortable. I also paid for room 303 but was placed in room 302. It’s not their fault the area is a wasteland for dining- I wish the river rocks bar had been open. Probably would have changed the experience. I love the idea behind this place- but I would either not book the third level rooms in the summer, warn guests the a/c is malfunctioning or upgrade the system asap. I kinda wonder if the room I was supposed to get had working a/c…
