The McCarty House - Mid Century Modern Gem!
Rarely is a home of historic architectural significance available for use as a vacation rental in most any destination, and that is particularly true in Gatlinburg and Pittman Center. Designed by Bruce McCarty, well known for many public and private buildings in Knoxville, Tennessee, this gem of a home displays his passion for integrating modern design with natural landscape. Using local materials, the home appears to be sculpted from the site using stone, wood and glass.
This is a space of peace, tranquility and timeless beauty that captures the mid-century modern esthetic in an organic, livable form!
✨ PROPERTY HIGHLIGHTS ✨ Built over 60 years ago, it exudes this era of design with unique charm and personality. The home has been thoughtfully restored through an extensive renovation that carefully integrates modern updates while respecting the architect's vision.
The kitchen is equipped with extremely high standards including everything you need for cooking and entertaining. New ceramic dishes, beautiful glassware, and high-end small appliances, like a standard coffee maker, are housed within the expertly restored original cabinets. Modern lighting has been added, as well as honed granite counter tops. New cork flooring and large appliances finish it off. The newly added kitchen bar is crafted from repurposed chestnut lumber salvaged from Knoxville's oldest standing home.
A two-person walk-in tile shower has been added in the thoroughly updated lower bath. Its design is inspired by the Great Smoky Mountains woodland oasis known as "Midnight Hole,” named for its deep blue-green water.
We’ve added a covered stone patio out front for lounging and as a stylish platform for the new 4-person hot tub spa. The cozy den furnishings paired with a high definition 65" TV make a perfect place to watch sporting events and movies with family and friends. High speed internet allows easy streaming of your favorite shows. The original handcrafted wood-burning fireplace proudly anchors the living room, which has been furnished for comfortable group gatherings. Upstairs you'll find two bedrooms, a full bath, and sleeping loft. Each bedroom has a private balcony with rocking chairs, dresser, closet, cloud-like bamboo memory foam king mattresses, and as in the rest of the home, they're furnished with period or reproduction MCM pieces. The loft is appointed with a twin sized day bed, desk, dresser, and closet. It's perfect for remote working or for an extra sleeping space.
The McCarty House was originally designed by Bruce McCarty for his mother, Mrs. E.H. McCarty, as their family summer home. It is still used for that purpose today by our family. We love and enjoy it as our cherished retreat. It is our honor to share it with you! Guests will have unlimited access to the host before, during, and after their stay.
Each guest will have full access to the entire property
I plan to interact with the guests to ensure they have a five star stay!
The location is arguably the best in Gatlinburg. It's in the heart of the Arts & Crafts district and close to quaint dining and authentic art galleries. It's only 1 mile to the Great Smoky Mountain Greenbrier Cove entrance, known for the epic wildflowers of Porter's Creek trail, magnificent Ramsey Cascades waterfall, and the majestic Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River.

The McCarty House was wonderful! I took my daughter and some of her friends for a long weekend to celebrate her birthday. The cabin was perfect in every way. The owners did a wonderful job creating a great family get-a-way. They have historical information on the property and the property manager; Travis keeps in touch every step of your stay. Together they provide a wonderful experience! The rooms and decor are very relaxing, and the kitchen is great! The view from the decks were also amazing. If you are going for relaxing and reasonably secluded, this is the place!
We loved our stay at the McCarty house. The mid century home was so charming. The back patio is so cozy. If we have the chance, we will definitely be back!
We were so impressed with The McCarty House! Beautiful surroundings and so convenient to all of Gatlinburg’s amenities. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed our time in the mountains.
Home was as listed and owners were available and communicative. Driveway was as noted in other reviews but a fun little adventure on its own. Close proximity to Gatlinburg and many other hiking trails in the Smoky Mountains. Hot tub was perfect late in the evening or early in the morning. History of the property is well represented and Popcorn pics throughout the home were a fun bonus.
On our annual Christmas Adventure, we stepped back in time with our stay at the McCarty house. While it gives the impression of a secluded getaway, it’s very close to all the fun the area has to offer! The kitchen is well equipped, the beds comfortable but the ambiance of the home is the gift! The added bonus of a Christmas tree was the perfect touch! Staying here was the highlight of our Christmas Adventure!!
Secluded designer home, on a hill in the woods east of Gatlinburg. It was a cozy space, with enough room to spread out for a young family (even two small ones) or for a couple retreat. Very comfortable beds, a nice back deck, and small hot tub.
Very clean and well furnished. Lots of natural light, but enough woods to keep the sun from streaming in too brightly.
Bring an SUV or high clearance vehicle to get up the drive.
My wife and I spent our honeymoon hiking the Great Smoky Mountains NP and were thrilled to find such an architecturally interesting spot in the area. The cabin is a unique treasure and maintained and furnished with love (and good taste). On top of that, the space is clean, comfortable and feels private despite being in fairly close proximity to all the action in DT Gatlinburg. We both agree this is probably the coolest rental we've ever stayed at (and we've been to many!).
Seclusion and privacy just minutes from downtown Gatlinburg
We have stayed here three other times when it belonged to another owner. Always enjoyed the privacy and relative solitude but - still close to Gatlinburg. Now we like it even more so because of the many improvements and upgrades that have been made, while still preserving the character and charm of the property. The biggest improvement is paving that last steep hill up to the house! The hot tub is also a great addition. Will definitely be back for a future visit.
The cabin was older, but very clean. It was a lot warmer upstairs than in the kitchen/living room, but it wasn’t too cold. The showers were finicky, working one minute then not working. The water pressure was terrible. The layout of the cabin was unique and we had good communication with the property owner.
I love this cabin! My fiance and I were married along the Roaring Forks river during our stay and this was the perfect cabin for the occasion. The huge windows and natural stone was amazing. And it has the coziest feel. The area was perfect, it's set right in the middle of everything but still feels as if you're on a secluded mountain. We visited Agnes Appalachian Gems at the end of the driveway and got coffee and treats at the Painted Bear coffee shop almost day that was just a mile down the Rd. And definitely recommend eating at the Peddler as recommended in the cabins welcoming book.
I brought my family to visit Gatlinburg and experience Dollywood at Christmas. From the first step, this was an excellent experience. The host responded immediately to questions prior to booking. The home was beautiful. There was a three-ring binder with additional information specific to the stay, which was very helpful. The decorated Christmas tree was a special addition. We enjoyed the large family room area, real fireplace, and amazing view. I would highly recommend this location. We will be back!!!
The property is a prime example of Mid Century Modern architecture and for my husband and I (both architects) it was pure joy to stay here. The current owners have taken care to update the house & furnishings in the style of the period. The materials consist of stone, wood & glass and the setting is private and serene with bustling Gatlinburg just minutes away. Honestly the only thing missing to us was a dining area - place to sit for a family dinner or just to spread your maps out etc. (There are stools & a counter but no table). We enjoyed our visit immensely!
Everything about the McCarty house is idyllic. Natural wood, marble, and stone fill the interior making this house feel like a true home. I would recommend this property to family and friends. The location is perfect to the National Park and far enough away from the noise of Gatlinburg, but also convenient if that’s what’s you’re in to. Will be back in the warmer months! The fireplace really set the mood for our stay, we enjoyed it throughly. This is a true mountain escape, architect of this home sure knew exactly what he was doing when he designed this home. I am so impressed!
This home is graced with stone and wood throughout with a beautiful wall of glass surrounded by forest. It was so peaceful with the wood burning fireplace and secluded nature view. It is just as the photos shown. I loved the uniqueness and beauty of it. Upscale architecture. Mid century modern. I recommend to those who are seeking a different experience away from the typical "bear" motif cabin.
We really like that the cabin had a rustic feel, while still having almost everything you need. It was quiet and away from the busy life. We really enjoyed the hot tub and the patio off of the livingroom. We loved our getaway. The host was amazing. Just some helpful things to pack if you stay here:1.Pot holders if you use the oven.2. Extra towels if you have more than 4 people. 3. Wood for the fire place (they did provide a bundle to get you started) and charcoal for the grill. 4. Warm socks or slippers for the main floor. The cabin was very clean and the location is amazing. Minutes away from everything. The ladies at the little gem store at the bottom of the driveway are very nice. Would come back again.
The house was everything that was stated online. The location was great and it was very well stocked. The views from every room in the house were stunning. We had to cut our trip short because of hurricane Helene. We will definitely be back! I also want to share that we initially were scheduled to visit in April. A week before our trip my husband had to have emergency triple bypass surgery. I reached out to Travis and he asked « Well when can you come? » He allowed us to move our visit date at no extra cost!! What a way to earn a repeat customer.
A great quiet hideaway but close to all the conveniences. If you need a wonderful home to unwind an just enjoy the nature around you this is it! This is our 3rd or 4th time here! A lot of nice upgrades and very spacious! I would highly recommend!! Looking forward to next year!!!
I’ve been vacationing in Gatlinburg my entire life, and this was by far my favorite place I’ve ever stayed! If you’re a mid-century enthusiast, it’s a must! I love how the owners have kept all of the vintage charm. The wooded lot is lovely. It feels so private, yet you’re a 5-10 minute drive to everything. The beds are super comfy and the hot tub felt so nice after a long day of hiking. Already planning another stay at the McCarty house next year with some girlfriends!
