Catch the bus from Greymouth to Christchurch. It was a minibus rather than a large coach. I thought the route travelled was much more scenic than the TranzAlpine train. We had a break at Arthur's Pass with enough time to grab a good coffee

I used to live in Greymouth in the 1980s and there are still nice parts to it, however it does seem to have suffered from a lack of investment.
