Fosshotel Vatnajokull

10/10 Excellent

"We surprisingly got upgraded to suites on the ground floor. The room was huge with two walls of windows looking out to the mountains. They were understaffed but the staff that works there was working very hard and were very nice. It is a little far from the glacier. I couldn't figure out the weird glass hallway at first but it is the perfect place to see the Northern lights."

"Ok. Just left there. My expectations were much higher than I experienced starting with the pictures. What you see is the Viking Village, THAT IS NOT THE SLEEPING ROOMS, not even close.. I stayed in cabin 16, and it was much like a construction trailer, in and out. Inside furnishings were a mix of yard sale sofa and chairs and low end IKEA tables and lamps. Poorly insulated for sound as the group in the next room chatter came right through the walls. The pictures of the rooms on expedia may be the rooms closer to the lobby that look to be remodeled, ours was not, very utilitarian and dated. For the $300+ a night USD, I would stay elsewhere. Breakfast was weak, waffles had to be paid for as they were not a part of the small buffet, there was nothing warm to eat, other than toast if you made it yourself."

"The name of the hotel was quite misleading. I had envisioned a cozy farmhouse setting with cows and milk buckets. Don’t get me wrong, I still appreciate the name! What impressed me most was the exceptional soundproofing of the room. From the outside, it seemed like a regular room, but inside, it was completely silent. Our room was conveniently located right in front of the cafeteria entrance. I woke up at 9 am and spent about 20 minutes getting ready before heading out. Initially, I assumed that the hotel didn’t provide breakfast or that we were the only non-empty room. However, my assumptions were completely wrong as soon as I opened the door. The dining room was not crowded, but there were still at least four or five groups of people enjoying their meals. There was even music playing from the check-in area, but we didn’t hear a single note inside our room. Looking out the window, we could see the horses grazing on the farm on the side. The breakfast food appeared plain, but I thoroughly enjoyed my slice of toast with Nutella. It struck me then that I was missing the flavors of non-Nordic cuisine."

Glacier World - Hoffell

"We really enjoyed our stay at Glacier World Hoffell. The location was beautiful, and the room felt modern, clean, and nicely renovated. The bathroom was very clean, I loved the shower soaps, and the bed was comfortable. One of the best parts was the view from our windows. We could see the glacier right from our room, and during our stay we also saw reindeer, horses, and sheep, which made the setting feel extra special. Having access to the hot tubs was amazing and very much appreciated after a long day of glacier hiking and waterfall hiking. Breakfast the next morning was good, and the staff we interacted with were kind and helpful. They even let us borrow bowls so we could have soup in our room the night we arrived, which we really appreciated. The only issue was that we were woken up around 11 p.m. by a very loud fire alarm. There was definitely not a fire, and my guess is that it may have been triggered by steam from another guest’s shower or by a malfunctioning alarm. Guests followed the posted instructions and stood outside in the cold rain for more than 30 minutes before anpther guest's travel agent contacted the fire department and firemen and a hotel employee arrived to turn it off. I understand false alarms can happen, but a clearer emergency protocol, a number that is answered after hours, and a little more follow-up afterward would have helped."

Hotel Höfn

"This hotel is conveniently located and very clean with convenient parking and friendly staff. We stayed in the #4 building, and our request for a ground floor room was accommodated. The breakfast is on the second floor of the hotel and there is no lift. Normally takeaway breakfast has an additional fee, but given that one person in our party cannot walk up stairs they allowed us to take away breakfast for no additional fee. The breakfast food included hot options like eggs and bacon as well as cold cuts, cheese, veggies, fruit, and breads. The upstairs breakfast room is very nice. The restaurant is a nice looking space as well, and very busy at dinner time. The takeaway pizza we had was very good. The price was similar to other pizzas in Iceland. The lobby has a cozy vibe and I enjoyed spending a little time there. There is a neighborhood cat who likes to visit the lobby, but if you are allergic they will put her outside. She was very calm and didn't seem to want to bother people, she just likes the atmosphere of the lobby I think."
