Spectacular mountain views at 4000 ft from a secluded log cabin
Spectacular views! Escape summer's heat in this rustic log cabin and enjoy its modern amenities and dramatic vistas over a broad valley and three Mt ranges. Surrounded by pine forests and fields, you will most likely see deer, cows and wild turkeys and hear owls. Bring your hiking shoes, s’more makings and some good books to enjoy in this tranquil, beautiful setting.
Prepare delicious meals in the fully equipped kitchen. The dining room provides a perfect setting for meals or enjoy dinner under the stars.
After a day of endless outdoor exploration, unwind in the cozy living room with a wood-burning fireplace. Enjoy board games, watch your favorite movies, or simply soak up the tranquility of the cabin's rustic charm. The log cabin inside features a 2-story vaulted ceiling, dramatic fireplace and rough-hewn plank walls and ceiling in the living room. Local vintage antiques decorate the living room walls. Outside the whole family can enjoy large rocks for climbing, large swing set and tether ball for outside play, hammock and an amazing firepit with logs for seating.
Temperatures at the cabin's 4,000 feet elevation are typically about 8 degrees cooler than in lower-elevation Independence, VA, just 8 miles away. And Independence typically has 8-degree lower temperatures than lower-elevation Piedmont locations such as Charlotte, NC, some 124 miles to the south. Fires in the inside fireplace in July and August are many times desirable.
NEW!! Big Ridge Retreat is pleased to offer a new add-on spa package/game room . While we will still provide the same affordable nightly prices, we are happy to announce a package with a new infrared sauna, massage table, full-sized billiard/ping-pong table and a hot tub (great for star gazing). Further info available upon request.
Situated close to Jefferson National Forest with its hiking trails (9 miles), New River Campground for canoeing or tubing (12 miles), Grayson Highlands State Park (Mt. Rogers - 13 miles) and the VA Creeper Bike Trail (42 miles), the cabin provides a base for scenic trips to numerous festivals, antique shops and outdoor recreational opportunities. Alternatively, you can rock on the front porch and absorb the ever-changing and spectacular views.

Our guests are best at describing the experience:
• The cabin is special. It’s located in a beautiful area of Virginia that provides solitude in nature while also being 15 minutes from a nice grocery store. We appreciated the well-stocked kitchen with nice cookware and kitchen tools. We spent a day on the property enjoying the view, walking through the fields to find even more splendid views, and having a cozy fire in the comfortable cabin. The next two days we rode the Virginia Creeper trail and hiked with wild ponies in Grayson Highlands State Park. Anne was responsive to all inquiries and provided all the information we needed for our trip. - April 2022 • 100 percent awesomeness!!! We loved the cabin and property kitchen was well supplied. Being from Florida we had a beautiful fire burning almost all week. Great family time. We hope to return one day - April 2021 • Views are unreal as are the chipmunks, dear, cows, turkeys, hawks and many, many rabbits. The weather was amazing, no bugs or skeeter's. Who would think you would need a fire in July. - July 2020 • What a beautiful and peaceful property it was so relaxing and the children loved taking walks, swinging on the tire swing, running around in the yard, sitting on the big rock, making some wars at night and exploring the Woods thank you for sharing. • What amazing views, the fresh mountain air and the picturesque cabin were the perfect escape for our family. Our kids’ favorite part was the tire swing and we all enjoyed fires in the fireplace and in the fire pit.

This property is very well maintained always clean and well decorated. Close to many outdoor actives we have stay at this property a few times and have always had everything we need and had a very great stay.
Absolutely, beautiful!! Exactly what you dream of for a family mountain getaway. My father was basically in tears the whole time. Already planning our return!
This property was better than we expected! The grounds are so well cared for and the cabin is cozy, rustic, and very well stocked! Our kids greatly enjoyed playing on the play set, exploring the forest, and roasting s’mores on the fire pit. The views are incredible! We are so thankful for the opportunity to stay at Big Ridge Retreat and plan to come back next year.
This is an absolute gem! Lovely, cozy, welcoming space where everything, beginning to end, has surely been well thought out. Neat as a pin. The decor, fireplace and outside package offerings are first rate. The view is really something special. Anne is an excellent host and helped me make my stay wonderful. There are little surprises everywhere. The best cabin rental I have ever done and I will be back.

This cabin was the perfect answer to a much needed getaway. The driveway itself, is something to brag about. The view is amazing, the weather was perfect and the cabin had everything we needed. We loved taking advantage of Galax, Independence, and Grayson Highlands State Park! It was a wonderful experience, and we will definitely be back!
Great location well away from other properties. Some minor issues with interior pests. Enjoyed the wildlife passing through the yard.

Beautiful views
It is a very nice cabin. If you’re looking for something very private with excellent views this is the cabin you need to rent.I was suggest renting it early spring late fall or in the winter it has no air. It is located at 4000 feet elevation but can get a little warm during the summer months.
The cabin was wonderful - exactly as described, and rustic yet well kitted out. The location is incredible - secluded, with perfect views over the hills, and yet close to key towns. And the hosts were fantastic - quickly responded to minor queries and maintenance needs, helpful organising our stay (including arranging for a baby cot and highchair to be in place), and welcoming throughout. We stayed with five children and an elderly relative for almost a month in the summer - the cabin was PERFECT. Many thanks again.
The views were spectacular! We enjoyed Our evening walks around the property! We saw a mom an baby deer! We loved the rustic feel of the cabin! Our son loved the tire swing and playing on the big rock! We had fun playing checkers! Can’t wait to come back! If your looking for a great getaway that’s secluded on a beautiful spot you’ve found it!!!
Thanks penny
Big Retreat is a wonderful and quiet place to go to! Breath taking view. My husband and I love the rustic cabin and all it’s charms. The kids loved the big yard to play around in and the tire swing! We also enjoyed our night time fires around the fire pit and fireplace. Great place to go and unwind. We would love to come back some day! Thank you Anne for your hospitality!
We had 9 family members in the cabin. Couldn’t have been more pleased. Beautiful views, sounds of nature, and a very cozy cabin. The deer practically walk right past you. We hope to rent the cabin many more times. Anne is a very hospitable hostess. You won’t be disappointed.
Even though the property was really equipped with everything need it, it has no A/C. Be aware of that. The owner asked me to just open the front and back doors to get some air, but that's not a practical solution when you have 1 year old baby and at bedtime is really a problem to not have fans in every room. We enjoyed our stay very much, that's the only issue we had. My recommendation for future renters, read well all the amenities before, because I only saw that after my booking. On another note, it has no TV either, but that was not a problem from us, that we needed to completely disconnect from Miami life.

Amazing setting in cool mountain air!
Our visit was in mid July to take a break from the heat and humidity of the flat land. What an amazing place. Picturesque setting at the end of the road, so no cars passing by. Secluded but convenient to Independence Va for anything one might need. Combination of pine forest, hardwood forest, open pastureland, and fields of wildflowers made for some very interesting hikes.
The cabin is perched on a knoll offering a wonderful view of the valley below as well as long range views of the adjacent mountain ranges. Constructed with a combination of log and timber, the cabin is nicely decorated and has a great fireplace. Very clean and neat with all needed amenities.
The location gave us reasonably quick access to the New River where we canoed and kayaked for an entire day. The town of Fries was also convenient where we started a 30 mile bike journey on the New River Bike Trail. Evenings at the cabin are spectacular as the sun paints its glow across the sky over the mountain range.
The rental couldn't have been easier. Mrs Anne is a great communicator. It was an awesome visit. Can't wait to go back!
We spent two amazing weeks at Big Ridge, feeling like we were on top of the world! We were able to escape from Northern Virginia heat and traffic and our two daughters (9 and 12) were in heaven with loads of space to play, outdoor fire pits for s'mores, and cabinets crammed with games and puzzles (which they organized on a rainy day!)-plus multiple sightings of deer, bunnies, cows, chipmunks, tortoises, eagles . . .the views are spectacular, whether on a clear day or during a thunderstorm, and the cabin itself is very comfortable, with lots of seating, a wonderful fireplace, and plenty of room for everyone to be doing their own thing. We spent the first week hiking (Greyson Highlands/Mt. Rogers/AT/Jefferson Forest) and kayaking on the New River almost every day. (Strongly recommend the hike up to Mt. Rogers which includes wild ponies!) Also recommend the Independence Farmer's Market--currently online due to Covid, but if you order online by Wednesday night you can pick up your purchases curbside in Independence (at Grayson Landcare) on Friday afternoons. A great way to support local farmers and businesses! We hope to be back in the fall!
I cannot say enough good things about this cabin.
Pros:
1. Incredible view of the valley and mountains.
2. The cabin is rustic and very comfortable. The indoor fire place is large and well stocked with wood. We used the outdoor fire pit which is complete with large log seats.
3. The kitchen is fine although we had all of our meals on the farm we were working.
4. The bedrooms are very comfortable and complete with cool bunk beds for kids or extra folks.
5. There are several places (front porch, veranda, back porch, and outdoor fire pit) to enjoy conversation or solo peace and quiet.
6. Although Wi-Fi is available, this place inspired me to turn off my phone for four days.
7. There are lots of games to play like, chess and backgammon.
8. If you want a retreat off the beaten path, this is your place.
9. I could go on forever.
Cons:
1. If you don’t like driving on hilly winding roads, this will be a challenge.
2. If you want to eat at restaurants and explore the nearest city, be prepared to drive a good distance. Hopefully, if you choose this cabin, that’s not your goal.
3. If you don’t like beautiful forests and wildlife (lots of deer, birds and other great critters), you won’t like this retreat.
This cozy cabin was just what we needed to escape and unwind. We wandered the property, made fires indoors and outside at the fire pit, cooked a lot, ate a lot, and watched the clouds blow by. The chaise lounges were handy for star gazing, a must on a clear night. The supermarket in Independence is still under renovation but the Dollar General has basic staples. Thank you for a much needed respite!
