"Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita was one of the most memorable stays of our entire Italy trip. Staying in a beautifully restored historic cave in the heart of Matera was such a unique and magical experience. Our room was beautiful, spacious, and full of character, while still being very comfortable. The staff were absolutely wonderful—warm, friendly, attentive, and always happy to help. Breakfast was also fantastic, with fresh local food and excellent service. The location in the Sassi is incredible, and simply stepping outside the hotel feels like stepping back in time. More than just a hotel, Sextantio really feels like part of the Matera experience. We absolutely loved our stay and would highly recommend it!"

"This is an amazing choice to stay in historic Sasso! The location is spectacular! The views are stunning! There is beauty at every angle. You will wear out your camera. No wonder it's been used as a film location for multitudes of movies. Call ahead and arrange for parking because the hotel is in a no parking/driving location. You will understand when you arrive. The spectacular hotel staff will provide a shuttle service for you and your luggage. The amazing and friendly staff will assist you with anything you need. I can't say enough of how helpful and incredible the staff is! Definitely stay 2 days or more if you want to hike at the caves. The breakfast is also spectacular! There is amazing food in town too. Research ahead of time and make reservations as the best places fill up quickly. Truly a stunning choice to stay! BRAVO!"

"The property itself is in a wonderful, peaceful location. The junior suite was huge and appropriately appointed with period furniture. However, a plumbing issue resulted in our shower/bath not emptying. This wasn’t a major issue as we were only staying overnight but temperatures were close to 40C. The night manager appeared more concerned about the impact on the next booking rather than our comfort & we had no alternative but to leave in the morning without showering…."

"Great property in an outstanding location near an entrance to the Matera Sassi. Clean rooms and comfortable beds were nice to stay in. In addition to the Sassi access and hotel cleanliness, the breakfast was truly outstanding. It featured a variety of coffees, pastries and fruits along with other breakfast items in an attractive, large dining room. The desk is attended at all times and the building is secured at night. My only mild criticism is better information on parking prior to check in would be a plus. A secured garage is under the hotel and available for $20 Euro per might. I'd stay there again, both for the hotel and the ancient attractions of Matera."

"The hotel is beautiful and in a great location but has some odd issues that make me think the management is skimping on maintenance. We noticed that the phone was not connected. When we brought it up to the front desk we were told that they were aware of the problem and they gave us the external number to the hotel so that we could call on our cell. No attempt was made to fix the phone. There was a leak from the bathroom sink. After we told them of the problem they did nothing about it. That evening we called about it. It took a while to explain the problem because the person that answered barely spoke English. They did send someone to mop up the floor but no one ever came to repair it. When we used one of the light switches it blew the circuit breakers in the room and also caused rooms near us to lose power too. They got it to work but that night at 1:00 AM it happened again. 8 of their staff showed up to fix it but no one was able too. Power was restored to the other rooms but never to ours. We moved to another room for the rest of our stay. We thought all this to be comical but none of the problems had been repaired when we left 2 days later. These things shouldn’t happen at a 5 star hotel."
