Boasting some of the most beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise waters in the UK, the spectacular machair runs parallel to many of the beaches on the west side of the islands. The machair is a real haven for wildlife, such as the elusive corncrake with hen harriers, seals, otters and golden eagles also regularly spotted. During the summer months whales and basking sharks visit and the Machair becomes an amazing shimmering mass of colour, peppered with an assorted variety of wildflowers including rare orchids. It is also a great place to spot dolphins.
Stornoway, the main town on the Isle of Lewis is home to Lews Castle, with fabulous grounds and woodland walks. The museum at the castle displays six of the famous 12th century Lewis Chessmen, found in the sand dunes at Uig Bay. Outdoor enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice with a variety of activities including hill walking, surfing, fishing, golf, diving, sea kayaking and cycling. Ness Heritage Centre, the well-preserved Carloway Broch and the historic Callanish Standing Stones are all worth visiting. Take a boat trip from one of the nearby ports offering a chance to spot an abundance of wildlife, or further afield discover the archipelago St. Kilda, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Artists and photographers will not be disappointed with the dramatic landscapes, spectacular sunsets and sometimes an opportunity to see the Northern Lights. If you are looking for a stress free holiday away from everyday life the Outer Hebrides is the place for you and offers a truly unique experience. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 11 miles.
