Gion is a fascinating part of Kyoto, but with quite some tourism hustle and bustle these days - Onoan was a perfect and calm space to return to.
The kind loan of the bikes meant we also had easy access to the other great locations such as Imperial Palace and Botanical Gardens.
This was the perfect place to stay in Kyoto - thank you so much to our great hosts (and very friendly staff).
Exceeded my expectations! The host Masaru is very easy to correspond with and so very thoughtful in providing information that is useful and convenient for travellers new to the area. The house is lovely and we found the location perfect for us. Highly recommend and hope to return one day.
Compact, authentic, clean, beautiful designed renovation in quiet local Gion. Everything we needed: nothing more, nothing less. Guest manual is excellent. Including a flow chart for meal selection! And better directions to sights than Google!
We very much enjoyed our 3 night stay in Kyoto at Unoan. Masaru was so helpful in helping us find dinner reservations and specific shopping locations. He made our stay much more enjoyable than if we had to figure out such things on our own.
The house was as described. The main room has tatami mats so you need to sit on the tatami floor while using it. There is a front room with table and chairs if you prefer that for eating meals. The bath and tub are nice to use and you have a view of the private garden while using them.
We had a wonderful stay, what a way to immerse yourself into Japanese culture. A family of 6 with 2 people in each tatami mat rooms, the hosts made sure these mats on the floor were extra comfortable with clean soft bedding. We were all so comfortable for sleeping. The Bathroom is amazing, my dream to have a window out to a beautiful little garden while I have a bath. The home was just outside of the main area of Gion but only a 10/15min walk. Access to the home was easy with a code and one day we took the bikes to ride to the temples. Coffee machine was thoughtful and the washer/dryer was extremely helpful with a travelling family of 6. We loved the traditional machiya stay for our time in Kyoto. It was small for a family of 6 from Australia but we made it work comfortably.. we have 3 teenagers and not one complaint!! One day we even came home to a little treat on the table from our hosts. Thank you and I hope to be back again :)
Liked: Cleanliness, amenities, property conditions & facilities, communication
We loved our stay at the little house. The house had so much character and very comfortable to stay in. We loved the bath looking out to the courtyard garden. Very convenient location, I would love to come back again.
The location, amenities, and charm of this house make it a 10/10. Additionally, the property managers are exceedingly helpful and available.

We absolutely loved our stay in Kyoto. Masaru provided lots of handy information about the area and he was quick to respond to questions that we had. The townhouse was stunning and we loved the mix of tradition and modern features. The heating worked really well over the colder nights and we felt very cosy. The townhouse is also situated in an amazing traditional part of Kyoto.
The only way to stay in Kyoto - authentic, comfortable and easy.
We would give this property & host 6 stars if possible. Everything about the stay was outstanding. The host even helped us choose the best way to arrive from Osaka, not to mention the daily assistance/recommendations for food, sites, experiences. The property is quaint, with all the comforts of a modern home, but with so much more class. Easily fit our family of 5 with plenty of privacy. Simple access to public transportation and so close to many of the greatest Kyoto temple/old town destinations. Wonderful and would happily stay again. Thank you Masaru!
Love this property! Masaru-san was so helpful - great communication before, during, and after my stay. The garden and shower were so relaxing, the house is beautiful and comfortable, and the location is great! I wish I could have stayed longer but hope to come back again soon!
The townhouse was excellent! Such a wonderful location and so peaceful inside. We all relaxed as soon as we entered. Masaru has done an amazing job of organization and explanation of amenities within the rental as well as local guides and tips. We all wanted to stay forever. Thank you, thank you.
We very much enjoyed using this home as our base while exploring Kyōto. Communication with Masaru was seamless and the house lovingly restored.
The kitchen was a bit tight which wasn’t a problem since we only had breakfast and snacks there. It would be a bit of a challenge to prepare a full meal, but there are many restaurants nearby and walking distance to subway and bus.
Clean, cute, easy access, easy check in, two bedrooms upstairs with toilet upstairs and downstairs; shower/bath downstairs. Great coffee-maker and hot water pot for tea. Bikes for using! A compact and efficient house that worked perfectly for 4 adults. The host was super responsive and there were maps and tourist pamphlets at the house. Excellent stay! *****5stars

This is the coolest houseI have stayed in Kyoto! There are bicycles available so you can also enjoy a ride in the Gion town. It is so spacious for two of us with kitchen and washing machine. Masaru is super helpful and gave us instruction on how to get to his place from Tokyo. I would definitely stay here again when I visit Kyoto!

We really liked this property! It has a lot of character. The owner provided lots of information about where things are and how to make our stay in Kyoto more comfortable. Thanks for letting us drop off our luggage before check-in time. And thank you for suggesting Sagan to eat at. We ate there twice! This was our favorite place to stay on our vacation and we would definitely come back here again.

Beautiful townhouse in a great location. Would definately stay at this property again. The owner takes pride in his property and has a detailed user guide to everything in his house as well as local restaurants and attractions. The user guide is written so non-Japanese speakers can understand everything which was greatly appreciated. The townhouse is welcoming, clean and very comfortable. Thank you for making our stay in Kyoto so wonderful. I wish we could have stayed longer!!!!!!

We had a wonderful time staying at the Unoan traditional townhouse, it was everything that was represented on the website. Masaru and his wife waited for us to arrive to give us information on places to visit and to eat. The townhouse was very clean and comfortable with modern conveniences and was very well situated to use as a homebase. My husband and I met 2 of our children at the Osaka airport and took the JR train to the Kyoto train station, about 1hour and 15 minutes. If you take the Shinkansen it cuts time down to 15 minutes. We took a cab to the townhouse which was only a 10 minute drive and cost 1000 yen. Since our son speaks Japanese he was our tour guide, I don't know if we would have seen half as much as we did without him, he knew how to navigate the train system well. We also used the 4 bikes to ride to some of the different temples so we were able to really experience the city. We visited Himeji Castle, Fushimi-Inari (The Red Gates) Temple, Sheridan Kinkaku, (The Golden Pavillion.) Another temple from the 8th century that used to host the kuydo archery. We took a day trip back to Osaka to do the Mario Go Kart riding for 2 hours thru the city, (which was a lot of fun), and then did a baseball game that same evening. We also attended an afternoon tea with a Maiko which was only a block away from the townhouse. We would have loved to do more, and we were busy for the 6 days that we were there.
The home is air-conditioned, which was a huge relief since the temperatures were in the high 80's and the humidity 100%.
All in all this was a great experience and we wouldn't hesitate to go back and stay at Masaru's townhouse again.
