Hidden Gem
Had to stay here when our flight home was cancelled. It was an amazing place with great staff fab food and a view to die for! Delighted to have discovered this hidden gem. We will be back!

Staff absolutely lovely. Food excellent. Our room had the usual modern thin walls, which could do with a soundproofing board behind tv. But other than that a relaxing holiday.

Lovely hotel which other than at the occasional breakfast never seemed busy. Dry quiet in its own private gardens. Excellent pool bar where we ate several times in the evening. The trade off is a half hour walk, downhill, to the town. And for us usually a taxi back up the hill.

Excellent staff very friendly, food really good and rooms and public area’s very clean. The only issue was enough irons and ironing boards, people seemed to keep them and didn’t return them, so maybe have them in every room. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Fantastic location, a little bit (12 EUR taxi) away from town. The staff were very friendly and, for what it’s worth, the bar prices reasonable.

Is this a hotel or a half empty retirement home? Once grand back in the 1950's now very very dated with veneer peeling from bedside tables and bathrooms that should have been redone at least twice in the last 30 years..... (shower curtains for the horrible shower over bath and a wall mounted hairdryer worthy of a museum!! Etc etc) Did not help that I had intended to book the fantastic Quinta da Casa Branca a true luxury boutique 5 star hotel at the same cost as this past it place.... how to rub salt in the wound of my mistake that this was so so inferior....

Overpriced, tired, poor food. Great service.
Mixed picture: we paid quite a lot for a very large suite decorated with lovely furniture and paintings. However, aspects of the room were unsatisfactory: the bathrooms felt like they were at an elderly relative’s house. There was no proper shower, just a hose with a shower head which would balance precariously on a holder on the wall and which came off twice, hitting my children painfully. Food was mediocre: a stodgy pasta dish came with a large dead black fly in it. Club sandwich was average at best.

A beautiful stay at the hotel. Staff, facilities, room, grounds and setting were all perfect. Great food, bar and the view is unmatched. Would love to visit again and I highly recommend it to anyone who is going to be in Madeira.

Beautiful Quinta and great location
I went here for vacation with my wife. We thought the location was great (quiet neighborhood) and the quinta was very nice. I would stay here again.

This is a good four star hotel. The staff were outstanding - friendly but respectful, efficient, knowledgeable and keen to please. They made our five day stay a delight. The A La Carte restaurant serves very good food with a surprisingly good selection of the best local and mainland wines, in a really lovely old building furnished with antique furniture. Excellent breakfast, too. Location is wonderfully quiet with good views over the Bay. Free shuttle bus to the Marina in Funchal runs 5.5 days a week. Taxis called by the hotel come within minutes and it costs less than E10 to get to most parts of Funchal. The hotel arranged a truly wonderful one-day trip round the island with our own driver for a very reasonable price. We would definitely go again, and can thoroughly recommend it.

Fab hotel.
Great place to stay, local buses very cheap and easy, we got the hotel shuttle into Funchal in the mornings and then the bus back when we were ready. The toboggan is a must. Food freshly cooked and so many restaurants to choose from, everyone so friendly and polite. Stunning views. Fantastic views.

Relaxing holiday retreat
The hotel was comfortable and clean. The staff were extremely friendly, polite and helpful. The location was away from the main tourist area but a courtesy vehicle was available to transport you into the old town. I would certainly recommend this hotel and hope to visit it again.

Old fashioned hotel
We were part of a group holiday. We booked via Expedia and got our room €60 per night cheaper than booking directly. However, this meant we had a room at the far end of the property in an annexe block and they were not the same standard as those in the main building. Clean enough but old and worn. The hotel is up a hill well outside the city and the weather can be considerably cooler and cloudier in the location. The hotel minibus was frequently fully booked up and did not run at all on Sundays. Taxis varied between €7 to €10 for the journey up or down. The breakfast was very good. The hotel has a faded elegance which seemed to suit the elderly clientele very well. Perhaps we may return in about 20 years.

Great Quinta da Bela Vista staff!
Thank you to the great staff on front desk at QBV. Really helpful and nice including phoning round trying to get paracetamol when my partner had a headache! This sounds like an odd bit of feedback, but I wonder if you should have cappucino/ espresso style coffee at breakfast rather than the pot of filter coffee. Or just as an option. Feel this would appeal as part of a 5 star experience. Nevertheless, really lovely peaceful hotel and kind staff.

Lovely hotel, well equipped.
This is a super hotel which is situated just above Funchal. Takes about 30 minutes to walk down the hill into town (would be more back up) or 10 minutes by hotel courtesy bus. The hotel is really well run and has great facilities. The views over the bay are fantastic. The staff were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. There are two restaurants, one which serves a 5 course meal every night (half board get this) and another a la carte. We never went to the 5 course restaurant as there was no choice and there wasn’t a combination that suited us, separately there is a pool / gym bar which has a reasonable menu and is a much nicer location which we used most nights. Room service was good too. We would go back like a shot and personally I would rate this as one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in for many years.

Very nice hotel, but a little distant from town.
We were aware that we had booked a garden room, but were not told until arrival that the view was very restricted by trees. Our main criticism was that there was extremely limited space for our clothes, some of the rails being too high for my 5 feet 2 inch wife to reach, so that we spent 8 nights living in part out of suitcases. The wi-fi also left a lot to be desired; quite intermittent. However, the grounds are lovely and the staff were very anxious to please, and were most helpful.

Wonderful Hotel
11th visit in the last 12 years. The staff have hardly changed since we first went there and are wonderfully welcoming and friendly. A truly tranquil hotel outside the town but within easy reach by taxi or bus. The hotel is always clean and tidy and the food is always good.

Hotel for retired people with staff very helpful.
As Expedia will be aware we complained that our room was too remote from the main hotel as my wife has mobility difficulties. Our room was poorely maintained and the view was only of a rather uninteresting lawn. We made an online comment to this effect which resulted in our beimg given an upgrade to a 'superior' room on the second floor of the main building of the hotel. As there was access by lift from the reception to our room this was perfectly suitable. There was a magnificent view across the gardens and swimming pool to the sea below. The room was more luxurious and well maintained and had the added benefit of a balcony. The staff are exceptional and many have been with the hotel for a long time. Breakfast in the main dining room was very good, plentiful and well presented in a buffet style. An a la Carte menu was available every night in the Manoir, a separate and rather magnificent old building. We only ate there once and it was very good. A snack style menu was available, virtually all day, at the swimming pool area and offered very good simple food. On weekdays the hotel provides a frequent, courtesy, mini bus to take guests into Funchal. There is only one drop off spot which is quite a long way from the town centre and a second stop nearer the main shopping centre would be an improvement. We would recommend this hotel and should we return to Madeira we would definitely stay here.

Good hotel with weaknesses
Nice hotel with very friendly staff, a few things could improve the experience: Rooms clean and sufficiently spacious, bit dated and could do with new carpets (clean but a little worn). Wifi in rooms non-existent unless you stand right by the window. Blackout curtains do not black out completely (not an issue for everybody but I like dark rooms for sleeping), additionally they have spotlights in the garden that light up the impressive trees but send a lot of light into the rooms.

Lovely hotel.
Had a great holiday. Difficult walk to and from Funchal even for the fittest guests. Shuttle bus from the hotel covers the trip free-of-charge but finishes Saturday lunchtime until Monday morning so you will need to budget for taxi's for those days and the evenings. Staff were excellent and the a la carte food was really good. Would definitely recommend to future visitors.

Old hotel with lots of character
