Yugawara Spa Ryokan Ashikari

"Wow, what an amazing experience we had here at this modern ryokan. Our room was spacious, private, clean, and full of nice amenities. The private hot spring-fed hot tub (onsen) was so wonderful, with garden and mountain views, and birds chirping peacefully in the background (real bird sounds, not recorded ones - if you know, you know, hahaha). The breakfasts and kaiseki dinners were outstanding - the best and most beautifully presented Japanese food we've ever eaten! And all the staff were great, with most able to speak fluent English. The small town that this ryokan is in, Yugawara, is off the tourist map, so it was peaceful and authentic, and so fun to explore, from the lush mountain forests to the surfer-loved coast. I don't think we've ever stayed anywhere more wonderful than this place. Don't hesitate to book; it's worth every penny. Oh and you can use the free shuttle service to take you from and to the train station, plus around town if you're there for a few days."

"The room and reception were wonderful, and the staff provided excellent, hospitable service. However, the shuttle bus service from Yugawara Station was very disappointing. I waited for 15 minutes at the instructed location, but the bus never stopped. It drove through the rotary so quickly that I didn't even see it coming and had no chance to board. A tip for future guests: To avoid this issue, I highly recommend calling the hotel on your travel day to reconfirm the exact shuttle pickup time and location. Given how fast the bus was going, you may also want to ask them for the best spot to stand so the driver can see you clearly."
