With its rugged coastline and a peaceful atmosphere, “The End” of Long Island has never felt more removed from city life.

Known as “The End,” to locals, Montauk is located at the easternmost tip on Long Island. Known for its pristine beaches and rugged landscape, the area is a favored getaway for New Yorkers. Montauk is bordered by Block Island Sound to the west and the Atlantic to the east.

The town has a unique history - its name originates from the Montaukett Tribe, who lived on the island until the mid-eighteenth century. Legend holds that notorious pirate Captain Kidd also buried treasure near Money Pond, at the northeastern tip of Montauk.

More than half of Montauk’s land is preserved, making it perfect for nature hikes and outdoor recreation. Surfers will find their own slice of heaven at Ditch Plains Beach, and families always flock to Hither Hills State Park. The park is known for its camping availability for those who enjoy a rustic getaway.

Even if water skiing, surfing, swimming, or kayaking isn’t your forte, you can still enjoy the outdoors on a whale watching cruise, where you’re guaranteed see plenty of ocean animals off the coast. Seals and seabirds are abundant throughout Montauk, so keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. The area is also renowned for its excellent fishing, so why not rent a charter boat and enjoy a day on the open ocean?

Enjoy a photo opportunity at Montauk Point Lighthouse, the first lighthouse to be built in New York. A museum detailing the area’s unique history is also onsite.

The village is filled with souvenir shops, and its bars frequently offer concerts and live entertainment. Eat your fill of fresh-caught seafood in one of Montauk’s many restaurants before settling in at your lodging for the night. You can walk around some sections of the island, but thanks to the rural nature of Montauk, it is most easily accessible via car.

Route 27 runs directly from New York City to Montauk, which are a 2.5 hour drive from one another. Alternatively, visitors can access “The End” via the Long Island Railroad as it runs from Manhattan into Montauk. JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia International Airports are all located in New York City.

9/10 Wonderful! (1,228 reviews)
"Beautiful full service facility. We stayed in a friends unit which was lovely. The only complaint would be that when the pool is busy on summer weekends and the restaurant isn’t, it would be lovely if the waitresses could let patrons order drinks. It only happened once on the 3 night stay all of ..."

"Room was exactly as shown in the pictures. Worked well for our family of four. The pull-out couch bed could be better but we didn't have high expectations for that. Overall unit was spacious and suited us well for the trip. Loved being close to the stores and right across from the beach. Good ..."
