Panzano in Chianti

Once the subject of battles between Siena and Florence, this hilltop village is now a tranquil place with medieval structures and gorgeous views of the countryside.

Panzano in Chianti is a small hilltop village with an intriguing history written into its medieval streetscape. This centuries-old settlement, once caught in the line of fire between two strongholds, is well worth putting on your holiday itinerary for its old church, medieval walls, superb vistas of Chianti vineyards and outdoor restaurants and cafés.

Stroll along the small village’s old streets where there are restaurants and shops selling locally made artisan goods. More shops, restaurants and cafés can be found in and around Piazza Gastone Bucciarelli, the main square. Head toward the medieval historic centre and see the remains of the original walls.

Panzano in Chianti’s history spans more than 2,000 years, dating back to Etruscan and Roman occupation. For many years during the Middle Ages the town was fought over by the rival powers of Siena and Florence. The oldest surviving structure here is the castle, dating back to medieval times. Built into part of the old fort’s remains is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. This is a 19th-century reconstruction of the original church that stood on this spot. Before stepping inside, survey the stone façade and the adjacent clock and bell tower.

Another church well worth a visit is the Pieve of St Leolino, situated a short distance outside of Panzano. It is thought to date back to the 8th century, although the current building was constructed around the 12th century. Admire the 16th-century portico and tour the interior to see religious art.

Take advantage of the Tuscan village’s scenic setting by walking or cycling through the green landscape of fields, olive groves and forests.

If you are in Panzano in Chianti on a Sunday, shop for clothes, flowers and fresh produce at the outdoor market.

To reach Panzano in Chianti, fly into FlorenceOpens in a new window and make the rest of the 27-mile (43-kilometre) journey south by car or bus. Whether you plan to stay for some time or are just making a short stop here during your time in Tuscany, enjoy Panzano’s scenery, history and ancient architecture.

Private room was more than adequate for our needs. Terrace view was nice and location was good to walk to attractions. Some guests were a little noisy at night. We’re talking 1am, well after the quiet time suggested at 11pm.
