About this property

Fall Color Basecamp | Lake Superior, Sleeps 8

  • Summary:

One minute from the sandy shores of Lake Superior, 20 minutes from Tahquamenon Falls, 18 minutes from Whitefish Point. Fall color peaks along the M-123 corridor around October 5 to 20, the falls run amber through gold hardwoods, and aurora season picks back up over Whitefish Bay. Wood-burning fireplace, open-concept living, full kitchen, and a roomy mudroom built for whatever you came back from. Firepit and gas grill out front. 4 bedrooms, sleeps 8. Direct sled and ORV trail access.

    The Space:

One minute from the sandy shores of Lake Superior, 20 minutes from Tahquamenon Falls, and 18 minutes from Whitefish Point. Northern Exposure sleeps 8 across 4 bedrooms, with a wood-burning fireplace, a full kitchen, and a mudroom built for wet boots and gear.

Fall is the reason to come to Paradise. Peak color along the M-123 corridor runs roughly October 5 through 20, and Tahquamenon in that window is the photograph everybody in Michigan has seen and almost nobody has taken themselves. Amber water, gold hardwoods, 20 minutes south. Whitefish Point picks up its fall waterbird and raptor migration 18 minutes north. Grouse season opens September 15 and the two-tracks around here are the real thing. Archery deer opens October 1.

Then the sun goes down at 6:45 and it gets properly dark. Aurora activity climbs around the equinox, and Whitefish Bay with zero light pollution is one of the better places in the Lower 48 to be standing when it happens. Firepit in the front yard, flannel weather, hot showers waiting.

4 bedrooms, sleeps 8. This is your UP basecamp in every season.

    The Neighborhood:

    THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Paradise, MI is one of the most adventure-rich addresses in the entire Upper Peninsula — and Northern Exposure puts you right in the middle of it. Here's what's on your doorstep:

    ★Whitefish Bay Beach — 1 minute walk

Lake Superior's sandy shoreline is steps from the front door. Swim, kayak, search for agates, or hunt for Yooperlites after dark with a UV flashlight along the water's edge. One of the most accessible and uncrowded Lake Superior beaches in the UP.

    ★Tahquamenon Falls State Park — 20 minutes

Michigan's most visited waterfall and one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Hike the trail between the Upper and Lower Falls, rent a rowboat to reach the Lower Falls island, and watch the amber water thunder through old-growth forest. Peak snowmelt in spring and peak color in fall — both are unmissable.

    ★Whitefish Point Lighthouse & Shipwreck Museum — 18 minutes

The oldest active lighthouse on Lake Superior and the final resting place of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is one of the most compelling stops in the entire UP. Spring migration at the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory peaks in April and May — one of the premier raptor migration sites in North America.

    ★Tahquamenon Brewery & Pub — 5 minutes

Craft beer brewed in the heart of Paradise, steps from the river. One of the most unique brewpub settings in Michigan — cold pints after a day on the trails or the beach.

    ★Vermilion Point & Crisp Point Lighthouse — 45 minutes

Two of the most remote and photogenic lighthouses in the UP, accessible via seasonal dirt road. Crisp Point sits directly on Lake Superior with nothing around it for miles. Worth every mile of the drive.

★Yooperlite Hunting — steps from the cabin

Whitefish Bay's shoreline is one of the best Yooperlite hunting grounds in Michigan. Grab a UV flashlight after dark and watch the rocks glow fluorescent orange along the water's edge. A genuinely unique UP experience you won't find anywhere else.

    ★Oswald's Bear Ranch — 45 minutes

North America's largest black bear ranch, outside Newberry. An only-in-the-UP experience the whole family will remember.

    ★Newberry — 30 minutes

The gateway to the Eastern UP's most remote adventures. ORV and snowmobile trail systems, the Tahquamenon River, and access to Crisp Point Lighthouse all run through here.

    ★Sault Ste. Marie — 1 hour

Michigan's oldest city sits on the St. Marys River at the Canadian border. Watch 1,000-foot freighters navigate the Soo Locks — one of the engineering wonders of the Great Lakes. The Tower of History, Point Iroquois Lighthouse, and Lake Superior State University round out a full day trip.

★Mackinac Island — 1 hour to St. Ignace ferry

No cars. Horse-drawn carriages. World-famous fudge. Victorian-era architecture and 80% protected state park. A Northern Michigan bucket list item that never gets old.

    ★Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — 90 minutes

Towering sandstone cliffs, sea caves, and the most photographed shoreline in the Midwest. Kayak tours, boat cruises, and hiking trails from Munising to Grand Marais. Plan a full day — it earns every minute.

    ★Kitch-iti-kipi (The Big Spring) — 1 hour

Michigan's largest freshwater spring pushes 10,000 gallons of crystal-clear 45°F water per minute from the earth. Take the self-operated observation raft over the spring and watch the trout swim below. One of the most surreal natural sights in the entire state.

★Lake of the Clouds — Porcupine Mountains — 3 hours

Michigan's most iconic overlook. Worth the drive for the view alone — especially in fall color season.

Northern Exposure is your basecamp for all of it. Everything above is within reach — most of it within an hour. Book your stay and we'll send our personal Paradise Concierge Guide with insider tips, hidden stops, and local favorites no travel website will tell you about.
