Tall palm trees rise around an important fountain in this historic market square in the center of Ajaccio.

See the magnificent Four Lions Fountain and its statue of Napoleon in the center of Place Foch. Relax here with a picnic and admire the enclosing architecture. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Corsica as you peruse the market for local delicacies, such as French nougat and chorizo.

Capture photos of the elegant granite fountain in the center of the square. At its center, is the marble statue of Napoleon in a Roman toga, surrounded by four protective lions.

Visit the plaza at night when the lights under the palm trees illuminate the scenic area. Along the side of the square find market stalls selling food. Haggle with vendors over snacks, refreshments and light dinners and sit in the square with your meal. In the afternoon, purchase local produce. Select from various jams, cheeses, spices, wines and other items in the market. Take advantage of free tastings before buying.

The plaza had a practical role in Ajaccio’s past as the access path from the town to the port. Enjoy the view of boats and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea from the easternmost point of the plaza. Look at the white façades of the buildings that surround Place Foch.

Several bars and cafés are opposite the square. Sit with a coffee and a crepe while planning the rest of your time in the city.

Locals formerly knew the area as Alder Square and then Palm Tree Square in reference to the stunning vegetation surrounding it.

The plaza is open at all hours year-round with no entrance fee. Watch an intriguing display of the Changing of the Guard on Thursdays in July and August.

Place Foch is in the historic center of Ajaccio, near the island’s east coast. Almost all of the bus lines will take you to the plaza from any part of the city. Walk around the pleasant area to encounter some of Ajaccio’s important cultural sites, such as the Congress Palace, Bonaparte House Museum and the Musée Fesch.
