The historic seaside resort of Youghal in County Cork is a picturesque and quirky little town, perched on the steep banks of the Blackwater Estuary. This walled town is packed with architectural delights, blending styles from across the centuries to make Youghal one of County Cork’s most unique tourist destinations.
Though it seems almost incongruent with the higgledy-piggledy seaside feel of the rest of Youghal, in the centre you will find the Red House, a rare and fine example of an 18th century brick townhouse in the Dutch style.
Built for the Uniacke merchant family in 1703, the Red House was designed by Claud Leuvethen, a renowned Dutch architect of the time. The red bricks used in the construction of the Red House had to be imported, as the local Cork red brick was considered to be inferior. This alone offers a hint at the wealth and standing of the family who originally called the Red House their home.
With over 300 years of history behind its grand walls, the Red House is reputed to be haunted – it is said that a spirit moves around the clothing of visitors to the house. While it is still a private residence, the Red House can be admired from the outside.
Situated just off Main Street, equidistant between the quayside and College Gardens, the Red House is a hidden gem. If you’re in the area, Youghal is definitely worth a visit. It is just over 30 miles east of Cork by road.
