About this property
Zolferate: private one bedroom retreat for couples in total quiet
Zolferate is a one-bedroom holiday home designed for couples seeking total quiet, privacy and a slower Tuscan rhythm. It is the most secluded of the three accommodations at Podere Sant’Angelo and ideal for guests who value space, silence and time outdoors.
The apartment occupies part of a restored stone barn and retains traditional Tuscan features. Inside, the space has high ceilings with exposed chestnut beams, terracotta tiled floors and thick stone walls that keep it naturally cool in summer. A traditional kitchen corner with a stone sink is fully equipped for simple, relaxed cooking. The living area includes an open fireplace, making Zolferate well suited to spring and autumn stays.
The bedroom is quiet and uncluttered, intended for rest rather than decoration. Traditional wooden shutters allow complete darkness, supporting a calm and restful night’s sleep.
Outside, Zolferate offers a high level of privacy. The shaded private terrace is for your exclusive use and opens onto a private garden with sun loungers. There are no shared outdoor spaces. The property is reached via a short unmade country road, helping ensure a peaceful setting without through traffic. From the garden and terrace there are open views across the surrounding hills, with birdsong by day and deep silence at night.
Podere Sant’Angelo sits at 700 metres above sea level in the hills of the southern Maremma. Even in summer, evenings are cooler and suited to dining outdoors. Walking routes start directly from the property, while hill towns, nature parks and thermal baths are easily reached by car.
Zolferate is best suited to couples and quiet travellers seeking a private base for slow travel in southern Tuscany. It is not suitable for groups, parties or guests seeking nightlife or resort facilities. A car is essential due to the rural location.

Very loverly place to stay. A few km down a gravel road but that adds to the experience. Graham is a gracious host. He provided lots of info places to visit and shopping.
From the first minute we were feeling so comfortable as graham was welcoming us in a very friendly way and the property is stunning. Such a beautiful landscape and the apartment had everything you needed and more. Very comfortbable chairs, the best bed we had so far in italy from all our trips and a breathtaking view. We would stay there definitely again and also the 2 kilometer road which is not the best iscalso worth it. Thanks for having us graham
The Podere Sant’Angelo farmhouse is in a beautiful spot in the remote, mountainous Maremma region of Tuscany. Its old barn has been charmingly converted into two apartments, each with its own terrace area.
It was a great base for pottering around local mountain villages, all with long histories, and for walking and wildlife. We saw porcupines, martens, hares, wild boar, deer, and lots of interesting arthropods.
We also went on some great excursions to the gentler Tuscan landscapes and wine and art towns of the Val d’Orcia, to Etruscan villages and necropoli on the Lazio borders, and to unspoilt beaches on the Maremma coast.
Getting anywhere involved a long drive on narrow, winding roads - but this area is way off Tuscany’s beaten track and well worth the drive.
The owner has lots of good restaurant recommendations!

Quaint, restful, beautiful, comfortable with a perfect location for a real Tuscan experience.
We began our vacation with one week here. The cottage was perfectly appointed in an idyllic landscape of rolling hills, charming hill towns, fantastic restaurants, and a gracious and helpful owner. We will definitely return! Thank you so much Graham! Your new American friends, Craig and Marhya
Beautiful remote location. Airy, high ceilinged rooms, immaculately looked after. Very special garden clearly lovingly tended. Wonderful walking, especially to Rochette di Fazio and the truly excellent Trattoria Cacciaconti. Graham very friendly and helpful. A real retreat for people who want to get away from it all and enjoy La Maremma countryside.
Podere Sant’Angelo is how you imagine your perfect holiday home should look.
Comfortable house, great view from your terrace, lots of interesting things to do and see. Graham, your host is kind, very helpful and also very knowledgeable about villages to visit and restaurants and shops to go to in the neighbourhood. This part of Tuscany is less known, and there are far less tourist than for instance Florence or Siena.

Tuscan Paradise
"Stunning location...adorable cottage - spotless, comfy (especially the bed), quality, with amazing views. Graham is the perfect host, welcoming, friendly, helpful if needed, discreet if not...
The village is enchanting....it is like stepping back in time. Local restaurants use local produce, it's a foodies paradise, try the butchers sausages worth staying in to cook..and you'll find herbs around your garden. Buy the fresh pasta in Castel del Piano (open mornings only) and don't miss the real Italian ice cream.
Love, love, love Tuscany...everything we hoped it would be and more...overload of breathtaking views.
Can't wait to return."

Relaxed country living on a Tuscan hillside.
This cottage surpassed it's descriptions. It is a well equipped and appointed gem nestled in the Tuscan hills beside sheep farms with spectacular views. This is obviously a property run with care and the owner who lives in another house on the property is gracious and helpful with advise about the area. For the couple or small family looking to get away from the noise and clutter of urban life, this is the place!
It is an easy drive ( by Tuscan standards-remember hills and curves ) to Siena and other towns in the region. Tuscan cuisine is as close as the Grotto in Roccalbegna, the closest town.
We would go back yearly if we could afford the travel. I would recommend this to anyone. Top marks on our Italian tour.

Tuscan rural retreat
I have spent several pleasant short holidays recharging in Podere San Angelo, far from the madding crowd and city lights. The apartments have been beautifully renovated in the old Sicilian style and Graham, the owner was extremely helpful and courteous. The property is situated in the heart of the Maremma, one of the most remote, unspoiled areas of Italy and there are lots of bridle paths to walk along and explore the countryside. I spotted deer, porcupines and lots of different kinds of birdlife. The nearby village has a couple of excellent, well-priced restaurants. Siena and other medieval hill-top towns and villages are within easy reach by car. No nightclubs but I had a curious experience wallowing in the hot sulphur springs of Saturnia at midnight, contemplating the vast swathes of the Milky Way.

Podere Sant'Angelo is located in the Maremma district of Tuscany, surrounded by stupendous scenery. The cottages are comfortable and tastefully decorated with outdoor patios for sunbathing, star-gazing or watching the sunset. There are trails around the property for wildlife enthusiasts (we saw deer, eagles and a wild boar). If you can tear yourself away from the apartment and beautiful garden, you can visit medieval villages nearby and relax in the hot springs of Saturnia. thank you Graham. We had a wonderful stay.
Podere Sant'Angelo is a real gem of a holiday let, tucked away off the beaten track - literally! We followed the owner's detailed instructions and
arrived easily at the honey-coloured property set in a gorgeous garden. The apartment was delightful with a comfortable bed and well-equipped kitchen.
We enjoyed sitting on the patio, watching the sun go down over the hills and waiting for the stars and the fireflies to come out.
A short stay but a real treat.
We had a very pleasant stay - lovely apartment, helpful and friendly owner and amazing views of the Tuscan hills. the only problem was that it was too short - only one night. But what a night! I've never seen the stars so clearly - the Milky Way was very visible. We'll be back!

Vielen Dank an Graham

Perfect place
The property is described accurately. The location is just great if you are looking for Tuscan culture, food, great vines as Brunellos, Montepulcianos, Morellino di Scansano and last but not least (our favorite) from Villa Patricia Vinery (Monte Cucco DOC), the very nice and calm southern landscape and non vegeterian "Bistecca fiorentina" from the local butcher in Rocalbegna as I do.
Graham is a very interesting and nice host. He is service oriented and he is here for you if you need him and, he let you alone if you want to be for yourself.
Here is a list of what you can do or where you can eat in and around Roccalbegna.
- Go to Roccalbegna, to the sea, to Monte Labro (by bicycle or by foot), to Arcidosso, Santa Fiora, the Valle d'Orcia (a must see!) or to Pitigliano on romain traces and so on.
- Restaurant recommendations: (from low budget to more expensive): Barbecue in your Zolferate garden (gilthead seabreem form the golf of Grosseto) or the bistecca above or a sausage from the same butcher, la Grotta in Roccalbegna ($) (order home made pasta!), the Pizzeria in Cana ($-$$) with a very nice view over the valley, the Osteria del Castello in Arcidosso ($-$$), Silene in Pescina (Seggiano) ($$$) or the locanda da Caino in Montemerano ($$$$).

Zolferate Bellissimo
The bumpy road leading to Podere Sant'Angelo was quickly forgotten when we arrived. Graham was waiting & graciously welcomed us to his lovely property. Our impression when entering our little cottage, Zolferate, was WOW! The pictures did not do it justice and the quality and beauty of our little "home" was beyond our expectations. Everything was new, modern, clean and very comfortable. As many have mentioned, the view was lovely and the grounds beautiful with many flowers, olive trees, rosemary, basil & other plants abound. We loved when we cooked in and could just walk outside our door to snip some fresh herbs. The area is so peaceful and quiet with only the occasional tinkling of the bells on the sheep grazing nearby to be heard.
Graham was overly helpful with his recommendations for sights and restaurants, all spot-on. He went over and beyond in his capacity of host when he drove us back to our car after a missed turn on our hike from Semproniano to Rochette di Fazio led us back to the cottage instead without our car.
We enjoyed Primo Colazione at the "Sport Bar" in Semproniano and the great little Alimentari next door for grocery shopping as well as the restaurant NoveCento. At Graham's suggestion we went to Cana to the Villa di Patrizia winery and had a wonderful tasting there. The hosts, Alessio & Patrizia, opened bottles for us to sample whatever we choose and of course we couldn't resist buying several to enjoy during our stay and to bring home. Graham also recommended Ristorante Da'Noi - a wonderful restaurant owned by Germans but staffed with local Italian chefs and probably the best food we have had in Italy.
We would definitely come back here if our travels bring us back to Tuscany - fall is a wonderful time to visit with great weather and not very crowded.
Thank you, Graham for a wonderful stay!
