Charming Storybook Home by Carr Jones

Built in 1944, the Hobbit house is one of the first sustainable homes in California ... designed and built by "green" architect Carr Jones. All of the building materials were reused and recycled: all bricks are reminiscence from the 1908 earthquake in San Francisco, the wood was repurposed from old ships, and the metalwork is the product of old anchor chains.

The home is comfortably appointed with Jones’ trademark brickwork, unique roofing, radiant heated floors, and rusticated lumber. A truly spectacular example of amazing craftsmanship and creative design sensibilities.

The house is uniquely divided into two spaces, separated by a charming courtyard and pool. In the main house {2 story}, you will find the master loft bedroom, kitchen, with an open area downstairs. The second one-story building (1100. sq ft) has two bedrooms, a sitting area, with 2 fireplaces. and 1.5 bathrooms.

The most unique house I’ve ever stayed at…

We loved the charm and uniqueness of the hobbit house….So fun and magical! Loved hanging in the backyard at the pool and especially eating all our meals outside on the patio and covered patio at night. Highly recommend! Oh….playing pool with family was a blast!

Wonderful house

The house was exactly as pictured. Beautiful home, well kept. We enjoyed the pool it was very relaxing. There were also a ton of toys that my kids really enjoyed playing with. Tons of space for the kiddos to play. Loved the coffee table books on the architect.

Unique property

Quiet! Unique property located near good neighborhood restaurants. Much larger than it looks from the outside. Somewhat like having two homes on one property with back bedrooms separated from main house unit.

Awesome place with character!

This was a fabulous vrbo! Loved the character of the place and it was nice to have everyone spread out in their own space. Having the keyboard was an added bonus. Would definitely recommend!

This home has so much charm. I loved the layout and the back yard was perfect. Mexican food, pizza, donuts and more within walking distance.

Beautiful but a little creepy

We had a wonderful time staying at this home for the weekend! The only thing that bothered us were the shackles hanging from the fireplace and prison peepholes in the cupboard. We knew it was an “artistic” choice, but it still made everything feel a bit creepy. We didn’t see any pictures or mention of this before arrival. However, the rest of the house was beautiful and we loved the pool table and swimming pool!

Magically relaxing

We had an awesome stay. One of the best neighborhoods in sac. The home was fully stocked with everything we needed. The pool and spa were amazing. Hanging out at night under the Cabana was exactly what I needed. The lighting was perfect the fire pit kept us warm and cozy outside. The home is so interesting the history of the home and whom built it was awesome. The only thing I thought was odd... Was the home is split in 2 sections. The master, kitchen, bar and livingroom are on one side of the pool and the other two bedrooms and 2 bathrooms were on the other side. We had a few issues... Finding light switches in the home interesting, almost impossible. Beds were so comfy, best sleep I've had in awhile. We were welcomed with fresh goodies from local bakery. I loved it. However... One kinda creepy thing was the shackle's in the living room on fireplace. My boys were kinda creeped out about. Knowing that they were authentic. All in all ... Beautiful, interesting and most of all relaxing. We will be back to the Hobbit house.

Fun house

This house is so cute!! It has an amazing courtyard with a pool and lovely garden. The house itself is quirky and has fun items everywhere you turn. I highly recommend staying.

What a wonderful and beautiful home. Reading the history of it and who built it was wonderful. Inside the home has the moat amazing things including from Folsom prison. The house had everything we needed for the weekend were we didnt have to leave unless we choose to. Would definitely stay here again

Amazing Storybook Experience

From check in to check out the entire process was amazing. The host was extremely responsive and thoughtful even going so far to leave some celebratory sparkling cider. The home is charming, comfortable and well appointed even though it is an older, historic home. We created memories to last a lifetime
