Cette église, dont la façade n'est pas terminée, a été reconstruite au XVIIè siècle avec un campanile de style baroque (1626). Sur ce site, situé au nord du Lido, il existait une église depuis 1044, dédiée à Saint Nicolas, le saint patron des marins. L'église, puis le monastère situé à proximité, ont conservé dès 1099 des reliques du Saint, ce qui en a fait un lieu de pèlerinage. Dans cette église, une messe concluait tous les ans les festivités du Mariage de Venise avec la mer comme le montre le tableau de F. Guardi. C'est aux moines bénédictins que le doge Domenico Contarini a donné le domaine de San Nicolo. Après la suppression de l'ordre des bénédictins en 1770, le monastère a été repris par des moines franciscains. Le couvent est devenu aujourd'hui le centre européen inter-universitaire pour les droits de l'Homme et la démocratisation. Il accueille des cours, séminaires, expositions,.. www.eiuc.org/ Le pont de San Nicolo date du XVIè siècle, il a été construit par l'architecte vénitien Francesco Malacrida qui a prévu des sièges de pierre pour les soldats qui devaient y monter la garde. A proximité se trouve le fort San Nicolo qui faisait face au fort San Andrea, situé sur l'île en face du Lido. Ces deux forts protégeaient l'entrée principale de la lagune (passe du Lido).
