Sint Maarten

Travel Guide
Sint Maarten
Snorkel in brilliantly blue waters, explore historic colonial ports and dance the night away in an oceanfront club on this visitor-friendly Caribbean island.

Come to Sint Maarten for island attractions: tropical beaches, tourist-oriented resorts and bustling entertainment districts. Sunbathe on the white-sand beaches, take the whole family out to dinner at a popular marina restaurant and browse the shops on the island’s busy retail streets.

Sint Maarten comprises one half of the island of Saint Martin. The northern side, known as Saint Martin, is French owned, while the southern side, Sint Maarten, is Dutch. Listen and you’ll hear Dutch being spoken as well as English and a local version of Creole.

With 37 beautiful beaches to explore, you’re sure to find one to suit your interests. Overlooked by lush green mountains, the calm waters of Dawn Beach are perfect for snorkeling. Surfers should head to Guana Bay for the best waves in the area, while Kimsha Beach has a thriving nightlife and plenty of resorts and restaurants just a few steps away.

Visit Maho Village, where you can watch the planes take off and land overhead at the Sunset Bar and Grill. With casinos and nightclubs within easy reach, this is one of the island’s entertainment hubs.

To the east of Maho Village is Simpson Bay, a relaxed resort with a quiet beach and marina. Taste fresh Caribbean food at the Market Garden, or simply sit on the beach and bask in the sun.

Another bustling location is the capital of Philipsburg, whose narrow alleys lead to the main thoroughfares of Front Street and Back Street. See the historic Fort Amsterdam and Fort Willem for lovely views over the city.

The main airport, Princess Juliana International Airport, serves both the Dutch and French side of the island. Plenty of flights run from the east coast of the United States, as well as to and from Paris and Amsterdam. To get around the island, either rent a car or make use of taxis, which are available at most tourist destinations and hotels.

Explore the unique blend of Dutch and Caribbean island culture in the fascinating territory of Sint Maarten.
