Examine these astonishing First Nations carvings, set in a park of rugged beauty where you can camp, hike, swim or simply relax and reflect on nature.

The Sproat Lake Petroglyphs, a series of captivation etchings, are a must-see attraction for any visitor to central Vancouver Island. See their beauty and complexity in person and you may well find this humbling experience a highlight of your vacation. View the petroglyphs early in the day then spend the afternoon hiking, swimming, participating in watersports and taking advantage of the many delights of Sproat Lake Provincial Park.

Part of the appeal of the petroglyphs lies in their mystery. Their exact age is not known. Similar petroglyphs have been found to have been created as recently as the early 20th century, while others date back several thousand years. The petroglyphs were created by First Nations people, who used traditional methods to mark the rock with beautiful nature-inspired images. Stand on the viewing platform and study the dancing images of ocean life, mammals and possibly some fantastical creatures too.

If you have the time, the park is worth more than just a daytrip. Set up your tent at one of the two campgrounds provided to facilitate longer stays. Spend your time here walking the trails, swimming, fishing or simply relaxing.

Sproat Lake Provincial Park is the also the place to come if you are looking for more thrilling activities. Explore the world beneath Sproat Lake, sighting a marvelous array of water-dwelling life, on a freshwater scuba diving trip. Or, take the chance to go waterskiing in one of the grandest environments imaginable, with stunning scenery rising up on all sides of you as you reach high speeds.

From Port Alberni, drive 15 minutes west to reach Sproat Lake Provincial Park. Leave your car in the parking lot from where it’s a short walk to the petroglyphs. As with most of the region’s parks, campers should book ahead, especially during the summer months.
