Come and see why Southern Bell beckons. We are located on the second floor of the 1940’s original telephone office building right on the historic waterfront of St. Mary’s. Newly renovated in the Low-Country style this property offers incredible views of the waterfront. Walk to local restaurants, museums and parks. The ferry to Cumberland Island boards within yards of the front of the property. Cumberland Island is the premier wild beach experience with 15 miles of undeveloped beach to explore. Wild horses and historic ruins add to the adventure. Perfect get-away for the author, artist, or to relieve the workday stress.

  • Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia, is a ruined mansion that is part of a historic district that was the home of several families significant in American history. James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. They were acquired by the Park Service in 1972.

Southern Bell Stay

Great place, convenient walking distance to all the downtown St. Mary's spots including the Cumberland Island Ferry. Highly recommend this place if you are interested in a fun stay in St. Mary's GA.

Back again and loving it!

We couldn't wait to get back here! The place is spotless and so very relaxing! We enjoy the fact that we can go out on the deck to watch the water and listen to the live music next door. Such a cool place to stay!

We absolutely loved our weekend getaway at Southern Bell!! The property was located right across the street from the waterfront! Best sunset views. Walking distance to many restaurants and it’s right next to the best ice cream and gift shop!! Highly recommend!!

Wonderful spot in a cute town!

We had a great time in this charming apartment! I really enjoyed sitting outside on the patio overlooking the water. The town is small but not lacking in things to do and see. This place is perfect for you if you want a quiet and peaceful getaway!

Beautiful location and Deco!

This was a fun, beautiful, remodeled apartment on the St. Mary’s River in Historic downtown. Comfortable beds and furniture, new appliances, washer and dryer and very clean. So nice to just walk to restaurants, submarine museum, shops and the waterfront park and Ferry dock!

An enjoyable experience

We really enjoyed our stay! Linda was a fabulous host! Her place was charming, spotless, had everything we needed, and offered an amazing view of the river. The location was perfect for walking to the ferry and nearby restaurants. Communication was superb. We will definitely stay again!

This was my 2nd stay at the property. The location has amazing views and is so convenient. The local food is amazing. The unit provides a great living space. I utilized the laundry area. The owner is fantastic to work with.

Fall visit to St Mary’s

My wife and I were very impressed with our stay at the Southern Bell. The place was much nicer than we expected and a great location. Cleanliness was exceptional and with all the amenities we never went to the store for coffee, cream, toiletries, etc…. We visited 3 of the 4 major islands in the area during our long weekend and would highly recommend the Southern Bell for exploring the local area.

Fabulous place

Views of river for sunrise and sunset, walking distance to everything including Cumberland Island Ferry, dining, parks, and museums. Very well appointed with plenty of fluffy towels, soft sheets, and comfy beds. Well equipped kitchen. Lovely decor celebrating the building’s history without being overdone. Beautiful reclaimed heart of pine for floors, doors, and some furniture items. Very relaxing!

Georgia getaway

We stayed for 4 nights. Upon arriving there was a very strong moldy smell coming from the air conditioner. Stong enough to make us ill. We contacted the manager and over the course of a day and 1/2 she sent a service person out to fix it. Day 3 and 4 were very nice. The place was very clean and beautifully appointed.

Cumberland Island has been on my bucket list for years. We stayed at the best location to do so much! We went twice to Cumberland Island, walked to several stores/restaurants, drove to Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach FL too! We even had some down time just to chill out on the porch and watch the boats go by. We even enjoyed the music from local restaurants from this amazing place! Highly recommend and hope to do again because there’s still so much we didn’t have time for. It was just the place I needed at this time. Linda was fantastic to communicate with and her mom did great with the decor!💗

Adorable apartment

This property was so well taken care of and located in an extremely convenient part of Historic St. Mary's. Restaurants, the Cumberland Island ferry and the waterfront park are just a short walk away. We could watch the ferries come in and out from the front windows. The apartment is well appointed and very clean. Parking was no problem. We thought one jab with the apartment was going to be - not the apartment itself - but the restaurant/bar located behind it. Friday and Saturday night the volume on the music there was extremely loud and since we are not night people but early to bed early to rise people we were initially annoyed. BUT the music shut off at precisely 10pm each night and we able to get a good night's rest.

Perfect Southern Bell

Wow! What a great location and wonderful experience! A must stay if you're visiting St. Marys! The posting is completely accurate--a great two bedroom, river front vacation home to welcome you to an almost island-like retreat on the St. Marys river. Moments from dining, nightly live music and the ferry to Cumberland Island. We were celebrating the retirement of a Navy friend at Kingsbay Submarine Base which is an easy 15 minute drive, as is Crooked River State Park. While we were out frequently, the full kitchen and available appliances and cookware would have let us dine in anytime. The deck was a great retreat to sit and overlook the river, or we could opt to sit on porch swings with a short walk. The next time we return to St. Marys we will definitely be looking to return to the Southern Bell!

Location, Location, Location!

My husband and I just completed a two week stay at the Southern Bell. It turned out to be the perfect place for us to explore St. Mary’s, Georgia and areas nearby. The view out of our 2nd floor living space was over the St. Mary’s River. We loved watching the Cumberland Ferry boarding right across the street. Restaurants were a short walking distance from our temporary home. Calm bike rides around town also helped us connect with the area (Saturday community market, parks to enjoy a packed lunch or listen to the local small band perform). Of course we went on a walking tour - Murder and Mayhem of St. Mary's - fun! At Crooked River State Park we signed up for a low tide kayak excursion with a naturalist. St Mary’s is located between Amelia Island and Jekyll Island. Both have amazing bike trails that go on forever. However it always was a joy to return to the Southern Bell…fresh, clean, comfortable and lacking nothing.
