Tarragona

Go in search of Roman architecture, museums, oldcity walls and the amphitheatre in this beautiful Catalonian coastal town.

Tarragona is ahistoric coastal town in the Spanish region of Catalonia. The city is known for its incredible history; the ruins and remains of theRoman rule two millennia ago and grand old amphitheatre, plus its massive cadreof museums. Visit the Museu Nacional Arqueològic and peruse the ancient statues, mosaics and pottery, alongside everyday objects that were used by the Romans, such as clothing and coins. Take a trip to the Roman Wall of Tarragona, built in the 3rd Century BC. The towers and parts of the wall havesurvived all these centuries. Visit Portal de Sant Antoni; this Baroque gate ofthe old city was built in 1737.

Make sure you take the time to properly explore theAmphitheatreof Tarragona, a Roman arena, built in the second century, whichoffered all the usual bloodthirsty Roman sports to about 15,000 spectators.Learn more about the rich, and often brutal, history of the monument.

Proceed on to the TarragonaCathedral and admire the striking façade with carved arches, ornatewindows and large gates. The cathedral was built all the way back in the 12thcentury, but enjoys regular renovations. The statues of the apostles in thepillar at the entrance and the picture of Adam and Eve in the port areparticularly elegant.

Explore the Circusof Tarragona, which held horse races back in the 1stCentury AD. This grand, ancient structure had room for 20,000 enthusiastic fans.

Take in the beauty of this part of the Costa Doradawhile sunbathing on the warm sands of the Playa de l'Arrabassada or taking arefreshing swim in the Mediterranean. Relax in the sun with a picnic on thebeach

We went for a wedding in Tamarit Castle and it was truly amazing. We did not have time to see much of Tarragona but what we did see has given us thoughts of returning.
