Now mostly used for weddings and galas, the Castle Vilafortuny was once on the front row of history. Built in the 12th century, about when the union of Catalonia and the Kingdom of Aragon marked the beginning of the expulsion of the Moors from Spain, the stone walls have stood through generations of upheaval. 4. Parc Sama

Set amid lime trees and palms, Parc Samà is the ultimate expression of “Indiano,” an architectural and gardening craze that swept Spain during the return of aristocratic families from the Americas in the 19th century. Travel back in time and across the world in its romantic garden buildings, some designed by famed Spanish artist Antoni Gaudí. Stroll down its narrow paths, meet the animals that still live in the Samà family’s personal zoo and appreciate the varied sights and smells.
