The Great Blasket (An Blascaod Mór in Irish) was home to the most western Irish community until it was evacuated in 1953. The island population was never more than 150, yet it left behind a very rich written Irish legacy - the island boasted three writers Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Peig Sayers and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin whose books have been translated into several languages. There are now boat trips to the deserted island where the ruins of the village can still be see. I would recommend a visit to the excellent Blasket Visitor Centre in Dún Chaoin before going to the island, to learn more about the life and culture of the bygone island community.
We hiked on the great blasket Island and it was great. The views are incredible and you can also meet a group of seals.
Beautiful unspoilt and home to seal, wildlife, and two donkeys. Take a 30 minute boat with Blasket Island Ferries. Spend a full day, hike the island and enjoy a relaxing coffee amid spectacular scenery.
