Piccolo Hotel Etruria
8/10 Good
"The hotel is modest but very charming and authentic. It feels like being part of the Sienese community—like staying in a private home. The hotel is located just two minutes from the Piazza del Campo, on one of the city’s main streets (Banchi di Sotto). Our room faced the street, which naturally puts you right in the thick of things—including two victory parades by the winning *Contrada* (district), complete with drumming troupes, in the middle of the night. We had expected a standard double room but found ourselves in a room with two double beds and a single bed—a bit unusual... The elevator was unique, too—worth the stay all on its own!
It doesn't get any closer to authentic Italian daily life than this. Everything moves fast—almost hectically—yet without stress; it is lively, and every moment is savored. If you want to be close to the real Italian lifestyle—if that is exactly why you are visiting the Palio, wanting to immerse yourself in the mysteries of this ancient, living tradition and become part of it alongside the locals—then the Piccolo Etruria is the perfect place for you. If, however, you prefer a generic hotel atmosphere—prioritizing standardized amenities over individuality—you might be better off looking elsewhere.
My wife and I were absolutely delighted; for me, the Piccolo Etruria embodies the warmth of the Sienese people, the mystique of the Palio, and the feeling of belonging to something greater—one big, extended family."
"The room was perfectly clean and tidy.
The staff seemed friendly and helpful (although we never met them as we unexpectedly had to leave early) but via messages, they were helpful and quick to reply.
Check in was very smooth and easy, with the place to collect the keys only a couple of buildings down from the actual place.
The room itself was a wonderful representation of Siena and the medieval essence of the city.
The room did have a fridge (which actually worked unlike many of the hotels we have stayed at in Italy), but a kettle would have been a nice touch.
Toiletries were provided, and the bathroom felt very clean.
The location was great; a short walk to the city centre.
There was also a courtyard/garden which I’m sure would have been nice to sit and eat breakfast, but we did not make use of this nor the breakfast (which is for an extra fee) as we only stayed one night and had to leave early the next day.
Overall we enjoyed our, albeit short, stay and would definitely consider staying in future if we return to Siena."
"Very cute hotel. We booked last min and it’s a great place to have a base to explore the city. Staff is very friendly. They directed me to free parking spaces 10 min walk away which was perfect."
"Perfect location to unwind after a day in the heat. Walk into centre 25 min. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend staying here"
Looming over the city, this fortress is a symbol of when Siena’s independence ended in the 16th century. Today, it’s a public space for exercise and entertainment.
