Volendam is a traditional fishing and farming village located on the shore of the IJsselmeer. Just 13 miles (22 kilometers) from Amsterdam, Volendam’s water-bound location has allowed this small settlement to retain much of its traditional architecture and proud customs.
Stroll along the water’s edge in tranquil Volendam Harbor. The scenic lake views are complemented by a wide range of old wooden boats bobbing gently at their moorings and the rows of tiny traditional houses and shops.
Step on board one of the old boats that offer sailing trips on the lake for a gentle and relaxing ride over the water. The still busy local fishing fleet supplies the town with fresh fish each day.
If eating raw herring with diced onions isn’t your thing, order hearty Dutch pancakes, fish and chips, croquettes with mustard or apple cake with coffee and cream upon returning in the harbor.
If you still have an appetite, visit the Cheese Factory Volendam. While getting an insight into cheese making, you may sample a wide range of locally made cheeses.

Volendam is one of the last places where women can still occasionally be seen in the elegant traditional clothing going about their daily business. Dress up in traditional Dutch clothing and a pair of clogs yourself to get your photo taken against a themed background at Foto De Boer or Fotograaf Zwarthoed. All clothing and props are provided.
The quirky Volendams Museum has historical displays and an unusual room full of intricate mosaics made from cigar bands. Music lovers should locate the little Palingsound Museum, tucked away above a restaurant that serves traditional smoked eel called “paling.” The museum is all about the special kind of Dutch folk music that came out of this region.
Due to its authentic character, Volendam began to attract famous artists in the early 20th century. Come here to see the timeless scenes that inspired master painters such as Renoir and Picasso. Bring a sketch book or a camera to allow the village to bring out your own inner artist as well.
