Historic architecture, exciting entertainment, political buildings, art, theatre and more – this eclectic neighbourhood is a real gem.

Centrally located between Georgetown to the northwest and the National Mall to the south, the urban district of Foggy Bottom is an entertaining hub that combines history, culture and architecture. Once home to a burgeoning industrial site, this historic part of the city is now home to an eclectic mix of people, from politicians to students and everyone in between.Traditionally, the area derived its moniker from the smog that billowed from the breweries and factories as well as from the fog that hovers over the Potomac River. These days, there is so much to see and do here that a little fog wouldn’t disrupt you in the slightest.Home to a healthy collection of government buildings including the US Department of State and the offices of the President and Vice President, this is a great destination for anyone interested in political architecture. See where it all went awry for Nixon at the Watergate complex before wandering down residential streets to admire the vernacular architecture.Although synonymous with the machinations of state, Foggy Bottom is also home to an array of excellent cultural spaces. The Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts is known as the home of the National Symphony Orchestra but also hosts more than 2,000 musical and theatre performances every year. Visit the centre’s Millennium Stage at six in the evening to enjoy a free show. While in this neighbourhood, don’t miss the excellent Corcoran Gallery of Art which boasts an impressive collection of American art and also includes works from masters such as Degas, Rembrandt and Picasso. The majority of Foggy Bottom is taken up by the main campus of the George Washington University and this blend of students, diplomats and dignitaries keeps things interesting. Happily, this unique fusion of politics, performance and academia has resulted in a fantastic selection of bars and restaurants that cater for every taste.Once you have had your fill of sightseeing, grab some front row seats for the sunset at the famous P.O.V. (Point of View) Rooftop Lounge at the W Hotel. There is no better place to sit back and relax with a drink as you enjoy the sweeping views of the city.
