We enjoyed staying in The Old Bakehouse because it was convenient to our travels. The entire procedure was easy and we found Amanda to be responsive to our messages. Check in and out was a breeze and we found the breakfast a welcome addition to our stay.

Charming cottage in Westbury
We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay at Appletree Cottage. Check in was very smooth and it was a lovely touch to arrive to freshly baked bread and treats left for us. Beautiful quiet location to explore the surrounding sights. We loved the village feel of Westbury and would definitely stay again. Thanks so much for our wonderful time!

We booked the 3 bedroom cottage, when we arrived it was already occupied. We were then given the two bed cottage which wasn't suitable for 7 people. The kids slept on the loungroom floor. The walls, ceiling and windows were dirty with spider webs hanging from the roof. The toilet leaked around the base and the shower leaked all over the bathroom floor. The yard was ankle deep in leaves. We had to accept this because our only option was to go home but we would never book this place again.

The lastminute booking confirmation stated "Full Breakfast" included but in reality it was cereal, bread, jam, eggs & sandwich ham that you had to prepare yourself and you had to wash and put away all dishes & clean up after yourself (no dishwasher). Pepper was provided but unfortunately for us no salt. Couldn't drink the milk provided as it wasn't lactose free. Pipes were noisy. Free wifi was great. Free parking was good but may be difficult for oversize vehicles. Towels were nice. Walking distance to town but limited dinner options (only option was pub or takeaway kebab). Bed was comfortable but had to crawl under bed to mess around with extension cords etc to plug in electric blanket. We don't watch TV but others may be disappointed that the TV is very small.

Response from Amanda on 14 Mar 2023
Hi Kerri,Thanks for your review. We are sorry to hear that the breakfast provisions were not what you expected, as the freshly baked bread, home-made jams and the bacon from our local butcher are usually very well received. We are always happy to accommodate dietary requirements in our breakfast provisions if we are aware of them. Even our daily afternoon teas can be made lactose free, gluten free, nut free, etc if required and often are anyway. Unfortunately, dinner options are limited in our village and we are hopeful that there may be some new options opening soon. However, we do have another takeaway and on selected nights there is the Wine Bar or the RSL. The Sailors Food Truck on the Village Green is very popular on Wednesday evenings.

We stayed in the heritage bungalow. When we booked it, we were under the impression that it was close to Launceston, but it wasnt. It was clean but not to a hotel standard. There was a bad smell in the lounge room and at the front of the property. The hot water was too hot (not sure if the temperature is set to a safe temp, so could easily get burnt). As its listed as a Bed & Breakfast, we expected breakfast to be cooked and supplied, but we had to cook it ourselves. The fresh eggs from the 2 chickens out the back were lovely. The location within Westbury was great with IGA only a minute away. It was also easy to find.

Westbury Gingerbread Cottages is central to everything that Northern Tasmania has to offer and is a great base for day trips to Tamar Valley, Cradle Mountain, Launceston, Devonport and so many wonderful locations in between. We are glad that you enjoyed the eggs from our chickens, they are certainly lovely. However, we apologise that your stay did not meet all of your expectations. We will certainly look into the items that you have mentioned.

Hi Debby, Thank you for taking the time to review our cottages. We always appreciate any feedback our guests can provide to help us make our cottages even better. Amanda absolutely loves preparing the breakfast provisions for our guests. The bread is always fresh, being baked same day by Amanda. She regularly wins awards at the local show for her efforts too :) Thank you also for your comments regarding the fire. All cottages have gas log fires that do heat the room up quite quickly. However, we will be adjusting our room preparation practices to ensure the fires are lit and rooms warmed-up in preparation for check-in. All the very best............Danny

Pleased with position of cottage. Thought host could have been more welcoming and informative. Loved the quaintness and memorabilia. Also the play area for the children was great. Could not understand why there was a cooktop and microwave but no oven. Limited meals preparation. Was hoping to heat pastries etc. for tasty and easy meals. Not everything was clean. Needed to wash crust from frying pan and wash some cutlery. Beds comfy and extra heaters appreciated as were breakfast provisions.
Response from Manager on 5 Jan 2016
Hi Leanne, Thank you for taking the time to review our cottages and we're so glad that you spent time in the region at Mole Creek Caves, Chudleigh honey and the Village of Lower Crackpot. They're wonderful places, and so close to our cottages. Apologies that the kitchen amenities weren't to your expectations. We try our very best to ensure all our guests needs are met so they can truly relax and enjoy their stay. For pasties and reheating, many guests use our portable oven. Alternatively, our private, paved courtyard has a hooded BBQ that can be used for chicken, lamb and other roasts. It's a wonderful space to relax in the afternoon under the magnolia tree. Nice overall, but not perfect.
The place we stayed at was the Servant's quarter which was a good sized cottage. The little touches were nice, like the loaf of bread and cakes on arrival, however I found the bedroom to be quite small. There was barely any room to move from one side of the bed to the other. But in saying that the bed was quite nice-it had that old charm feel to it. The shower wasn't great, water pressure was poor. But overall we enjoyed our stay.
Response from Danny on 5 Jan 2016
Hi Andrew, Thanks so much for taking the time to review our cottages. The Servant's Quarters is one of our more popular cottages, full of history and charm. Under the floor boards in the living room is an old well, since filled-in with convict bricks and now boarded over. This was the outcome of a fire early last century. In early 2015, we were fortunate enough to purchase a lovely, timber 4-poster queen bed for the Servant's Quarters. It truly looks amazing with the carved headboard and the netting draping over the posts' rails; creating a secluded atmosphere in the bed within the cottage. Very cosy and quaint. We hope you have the chance to visit us again when next you're travelling through Northern Tasmania. Safe travels....................Danny

Charming and different
Gingerbread cottages have rightly won a number of awards. They are genuine 1800s cottages, but with modern conveniences carefully added. The cottages are 'dressed'. almost like a film set, in genuine period items that will have many visitors exclaiming "my Granny had one of those!". Breakfast is a DIY affair, with plentiful food provided and replenished daily, including home made preserves and home baked fresh bread. A must as a base for exploring nearby Launceston (20 klicks away), the lovely Meander Valley, or as a romantic getaway for just the two of you.
Dear Mike, Thank you so much for your kind comments. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us in our little slice of paradise. Amanda is very chuffed that you enjoyed her bread and preserves, having recently taken-out back-to-back "best in class" for her cooking at the annual Westbury Show. All the very best with your future travels. Kind regards...............Danny

Not worth it for the price
We stayed here for just 1 night, but I was not too impressed. We stayed in the Corner Cottage, which had nice decor and nice bathroom. Overall it was clean enough, but not great. The Lonely Planet review made me decide to stay here, but in the end I disagreed with their review. I stayed in much nicer, cleaner, cheaper cottages elsewhere in Tasmania. The big disappointment was the price we paid. Though I booked for 4 people through Expedia there was an extra guest charge applied that really increased the price after the fact, making it not worth it in the end. Had I known about the extra guest charge up front I would have selected to stay somewhere else. Though I try to be conscientious of these types of fees, I missed this one!
Response from Owner/Operator on 30 Dec 2015
Thank you for your review. We truly do appreciate our guests taking the time to provide honest feedback so that we may have the opportunity to continually improve our business. We recently took the "tree change" from Queensland and purchased these wonderful, historic cottages in the heart of Northern Tasmania. As new owners, we are reviewing all aspects of the business and have since undertaken a full rate review. Working with WOTIF/Expedia, we have updated our pricing and property description to ensure the product offering and representation is accurate with no hidden charges. We do hope you take the opportunity to visit us again when next in Tasmania. Safe travels.................Danny & Amanda
