Koduchi no Yado Tsurukamedaikichi

8/10 Good

"Great little inn, in a perfect spot. Very easy walking distance to all the temples and sights just across the street. Beautiful river and forest just out your window, and steps to the bus stop to take you into the park. Delicious meal in the hotel, only it wasn’t available both nights. I also wasn’t able to book a private bath, which was very disappointing. I felt like these options should be available during the booking process, you have to call ahead to reserve and I wasn’t aware of that, and as a result ate dinner from a convenience store the first night, because everything in the town closes very early. The shower/bathroom is small, which is pretty normal for Japan but this was possibly the tiniest one I’ve encountered in weeks of travel here. Also the mattress in the western style room was hard as a board, not comfortable at all. I wish I’d booked a Japanese style room, because while the bed is on the floor, at least the mattress is comfortable. All in all a good stay."

"It is a classic hotel but the annex building is fully renovated and beautiful. The room was comfortable with nice amenities. It was so calm and peaceful. I loved the tea set they provided and enjoyed the room overlooking the garden outside. Had very comfortable beds. Staff was nice and welcoming. Breakfast was nice too. The only downside was lack of dinner options in the area. We did a room service one night and had their famous curry… which was alright but expensive. We also had a meal at Meiji no Yakata nearby which was great. I think most restaurants were closed for dinner on weekdays though. There was a really good yuba place for lunch closed to the hotel."

"This is a terrific basic hotel with very clean and stylish Western-style rooms (albeit with the small Japanese beds) and public spaces at reasonable rates. Would definitely stay here again. It is a bit out of the way from central Nikko (up a hill from the train stations, and a bit too far on rural roads to be truly walkable), but cabs are cheap and the hotel runs a free shuttle to the stations in the morning and late afternoon. Also there is no restaurant on-site. However, there’s free tea/coffee/miso soup in the lobby, basic food items for sale at the front desk, and a good breakfast truck (with Western breakfast items and coffee) comes by from 7-10 am."

Kinugawa Onsen Hotel

"Unfortunately this property did not meet expectations and was grossly overpriced. The Japanese style room was very dated but a nice size. Good AC. The food was great and there were a lot of options. The property needed to be cleaned and updated. The area outside of the property is shocking. It is filled with abandoned buildings that are various states of disrepair. It felt unsafe. Transportation wasn’t great. I booked the bus- which is said to be an amenity- only to learn we had to pay getting off. Good thing I had cash. People were nice but I’d never go back."

"Such a neat hotel nestled besides a picturesque river. The hotel feels nostalgic but very well maintained. The entire surrounding community is a throwback Show era town. Helpful staff at the reception desk and restaurant. Breakfast and lunch rotated between 2 menus but options were plentiful. This is my second visit to this hotel and it is in such a convenient location. Be sure to explore the Kinugawaonsen station and surrounding reservoirs and rural communities."

TAOYA Nikko Kirifuri

"Lovely space. Very large buffet for dinner and breakfast with a mix of mostly Japanese and some western foods. Afternoon tea was appreciated by hungry family after hiking that day. We had a traditional tatami room to accommodate our family in one room, a bit dusty for the son with allergies, sleeping so close to the floor Outdoor rooftop onsen had amazing views. Mens only and women’s only Catch the shuttle bus (110 yen per person) across the street from the Tobu Nikko station, in front of the coffee shop. We played tennis at the court across the front entrance for 1100 yen (rackets and ball rental) Trail around the hotel was nice in the morning to wake up but would not venture out past dark as there are no lights beyond the very start. A bit of a hill heading back and we finished it in under 30 mins but we were motoring to get to our breakfast buffet start. "
