Learn about one of the city’s favorite sons at the Rafael Coronel Museum, which has elegant chambers that display more than 16,000 works of art. Meet the unflinching gaze of the 20th-century artist’s masks, which are part of one of the world’s largest collections of their kind.
Wander south through the quaint alleys of the historic center to reach the Catedral de Zacatecas. Admire the spectacular Baroque main façade, made up of pink stones with towers. It has Corinthian columns and pedestals with carvings of ecclesiastical figures, including angels and floral motifs.
Continue exploring the old town, chatting to locals and trying the regional dishes, such as stews with three kinds of meat and corn tortillas with shredded pork. As you take in the colonial aesthetic of the 19th-century buildings, you may find yourself out of breath due to the altitude of the city center, which stands at 8,000 feet (2,400 meters).
Take a break at the picturesque Parque Sierra de Alica, which has a large fountain that puts on an extravagant light show at night. Lay down a blanket and enjoy a picnic with family and friends.
To the east of the park you’ll find El Cubo Aqueduct, construction of which began in the last years of colonialization. Also in the region near the park is the iconic Bicentennial Plaza, which commemorates the 200-year anniversary of Mexico’s independence with a tall, metal obelisk.
The city is hidden in the hills in the northeastern corner of Zacatecas state. Expect mild winters with cold nights and warm summers in this dry region. Fly to Zacatecas International Airport from Mexico City or Tijuana and take a taxi for the 20-minute ride to Zacatecas town center. You can also arrive by private car, bus or railway. Visit nearby communes, such as Guadalupe, La Pimienta and Cineguillas.
