Go on a culinary adventure, sampling traditional Taiwanese snacks and exotic local specialties at this large and lively street market.

The Zhonghua Night Market is the oldest night market in Taichung and has been popular with hungry locals and tourists for more than 40 years. Browse hundreds of stalls selling exotic dishes and food from all over Taiwan.

The market extends for more than 1.9 miles (3 kilometers) along a busy street. Devote at least a couple of hours to enjoying the lively atmosphere and seeing what's on offer.

Use your trip to the market as an excuse to learn about Taiwanese cuisine and to sample some of the region's culinary specialties. Taste an oyster omelet, a Tainan dish that is typically made with fresh oysters, potato starch, eggs and vegetables. Try stewed thick noodles, steamed sandwiches, spring rolls and bawan, a deep fried meat ball. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, look for stalls serving snake meat.

The market also offers a diverse array of international dishes. In addition to kebabs and pizzas, there are lots of other Asian cuisines to try, including Shanghai hot pot and Japanese-style crepes. If you don’t want to eat as you are walking, sit down at one of the many small eating areas next to the stalls.

Do take care as you progress through the market, because the road does not close to traffic. You will most likely see locals riding their motorbikes right up to the stalls to pick up food to go.

While food is the market’s biggest draw, there are also stalls selling clothing and a variety of other items.

Zhonghua Night Market is located within walking distance of Taichung Station. If you prefer not to walk, take one of the city buses that run between the station and the market. After your visit, carry on your shopping experience at the nearby Chungyo Department Store. This upscale retail outlet sells everything from electronics to jewelry. Among the store’s outstanding features are the themed restrooms, including one with an undersea motif.
