I booked Ashby Manor House in early March for a short trip to attend a wedding with my partner. Liesl reached out when I made our reservation, offering a ride from the airport and suggestions for tourist excursions. We arranged a car through her to and from the airport, and I strongly recommend it. Our stay in Cape Town was brief, but whenever I needed anything, help came immediately. The room was also very clean and comfortable. The location is safe and close to dining options, some of which are right on the beach. Getting downtown is easy through Uber or a driver, with arrangements with Liesl. The staff was kind and went out of their way to accommodate us. For instance, we arrived early, and they rushed to prepare our room. As we departed, we were allowed to store our items safely after checking out that morning and shower before heading to the airport. We had a 20 hour journey, so I can overstate how grateful we were for the opportunity to shower and rest upon arrival and before our departure. If I return to Cape Town, I will book Ashby again.

The unit was nice because of washer and dryer being available. Some things did need some attention and maintenance such as shower door not closing properly as well as washer door not opening when cycle was completed. Staff was friendly and addressed issues in a timely manner.

This was an expensive hotel and we were underwhelmed by the service. Our room was not cleaned in a timely manner so we asked for it to be cleaned in the morning the next day, but they had not cleaned it be 3pm when we got back. The service in the bar was slow when we were seated outdoors. Disappointing. Also, the soundproofing between rooms was poor considering the recent refurbishment.

I’ve stayed at Taj Cape Town several times over the years, and it’s always been one of my favourite hotels in the city. The location is good — right in the heart of Cape Town, close to the Company’s Garden and many of the city’s main attractions.
The staff are truly wonderful — warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. Their professionalism and friendliness create a welcoming atmosphere that makes every stay pleasant.
That said, compared to how the property felt two or three years ago, the hotel now feels a little tired and would really benefit from a light renovation or refresh. It’s still elegant and comfortable, but it has lost a bit of its sparkle.
Unfortunately, during this stay, my travel companions experienced an unpleasant situation: a portion of their cash went missing from their belongings. Not the entire amount, but enough to be noticed. Thankfully, the hotel management handled it professionally and provided compensation, which was appreciated — but still, it’s a reminder to keep valuables very secure and to be cautious even with the in-room safe.
Overall, Taj Cape Town remains a charming and well-located hotel with excellent service and kind people. With some renovation and tighter security measures, it could easily return to being one of the best hotels in the city.
