Swallows House is a spacious, luxury house situated in the tiny hamlet of Skelwith Fold which enjoys stunning views over the River Brathay towards Loughrigg and the Fairfield Horseshoe. Set in a large well maintained garden, it is a haven for a great variety of birds and wildlife.
Swallows offers peace and tranquility; a gathering place for the whole family and since it is situated in the heart of the Lakes, it provides an excellent base for walking or touring the surrounding fells and lakes. Wordsworth's, Beatrix Potter's and Ruskin's homes are located nearby.
The current owners have lovingly restored this house, parts of which date back to the 17th Century, to provide generous accommodation for up to eight people in wonderful surroundings. Every room is beautifully appointed, with high quality furnishings to enable guests to relax in comfort.
On the ground floor there is a large lounge, open log-burning fireplace and bay window with wide views of the surrounding fells. There is an elegant dining room with a large oak table - for that family celebration; a comfortable sitting room with French doors opening onto the garden patio. There is a well equipped kitchen with a range cooker and circular granite breakfast table, games room, study, with broadband connection; boot and shower rooms and a further WC/cloakroom. Both TVs in the main sitting room and games room are equipped with fire sticks providing access to Netflix and Amazon Prime.
Upstairs there are four tastefully furnished, spacious double bedrooms (two king-sized, one double & one twin) all with breath-taking views. The en-suite and family bathrooms are fitted with Villeroy Boch and the house is centrally heated throughout.
All the beds are made up ready for you, towels are included so no need to bring those, and shower mats are also provided. Two tea towels and a set of oven gloves will be in the kitchen along with a starter pack that includes: washing up liquid, kitchen roll, toilet rolls, basic cleaning products, a bin bag in each bin and dishwasher tabs. Coal for the open fire is provided for your use, along with logs for the log burner. There is also a Webber barbeque stored in the garage for your use, but you will need to bring charcoal.
The terrace and garden provide fantastic views across to Loughrigg and beyond. There was a large owl nesting in one of the bushes in the garden this year and swallows are regular visitors. Please bear in mind that parts of the garden are quite steep and you will need to keep an eye on smaller children.
There are many circular walks from the house; the renowned Chester's and Drunken Duck Inn are less than a mile away. There is private parking for 4 cars and a garage.

We stayed at the cottage April 2025 for a week. The cottage is in a great location, quiet with amazing views but a short drive from Ambleside and other villages. The cottage is very large, all rooms are big with ample space. It’s very well maintained with everything you could want for your stay - would highly recommend. I gave the check in process three stars only because you have to drive to Elterwater to get the key and return it - it’s only ten minutes up the road but a key safe on the property would be easier. Nonetheless the staff were really helpful and collecting the key was no problem.
Swallows House is a wonderful base for a holiday with everything you need. Very comfortable with quality furniture and well equipped for the while family.
A peaceful base with easy access to all the key tourist attractions in the area.
