We follow our guests lead. If you need anything at all, don't hesitate to message us or call anytime.
A quiet, sleepy little town of Barryville offers river views and a couple of restaurants. Eldred is about 15 minutes away and offers essentials at the Peck's Market.
Guests have full access of the property aside from the outhouse storage. Please do not venture far into the woods as the boundary lines are not clear and there are potential hazards.
Welcome to The Schoolhouse, a lovingly restored 19th-century schoolhouse turned serene woodland retreat—complete with a separate Writer’s Casita. Nestled just outside the charming hamlet of Barryville, NY and minutes from the Delaware River and the historic Roebling Bridge, this peaceful property offers a blend of nostalgia, comfort, and nature.
Inside the Schoolhouse, you'll find curated, thoughtful interiors—high ceilings, natural wood touches, and design-forward elements like a bold tiled bathroom, matte brass fixtures, and vintage-inspired furnishings. The cozy kitchen features modern open shelving, handmade tile, and all the essentials to cook and gather.
The Rooms
The Main Room – Living, Dining & Gathering
Step through the original front door from the covered porch and into the heart of the Schoolhouse with its airy, open main room — once a place of lessons, now a space for connection and comfort. At one end, a large farmhouse table anchors the dining area, perfect for candlelit dinners, card games, or lazy breakfasts that stretch into the afternoon. At the other, a plush sofa and cozy chairs invite you to curl up with a book, sip wine, or watch a movie as evening settles in.
Tall ceilings and oversized windows fill the space with light by day and starlit calm by night. Thoughtful touches like woven textiles, antique finds, and curated bookshelves give the room soul. It’s the kind of space that holds conversation and quiet in equal measure — whether you're reconnecting with friends or simply listening to the wind in the trees.
The Kitchen – Where History Meets Modern Comfort
Once filled with the echoes of chalk and school bells, the Schoolhouse kitchen is now a beautifully renovated space designed for slow mornings and shared meals. A farmhouse sink overlooks the wooded hillside, while open shelving displays a curated collection of dishes and glassware. Deep green cabinetry and brass fixtures add warmth and elegance, while modern appliances make cooking feel easy and inviting.
A glass door just off the kitchen leads directly to the patio garden area, where a grill and outdoor dining table invite al fresco meals. Adirondack chairs and a fire pit offer space to lounge, unwind, and enjoy the fresh forest air — making the kitchen a true hub connecting indoors and out.
Upstairs Bedroom – The Schoolhouse Loft
Tucked beneath the gabled roof of the original schoolhouse, this light-filled loft feels like a secret hideaway. A queen bed with soft linens and layered textiles invites long, restful nights. Slanted ceilings, exposed beams, and carefully curated artwork add warmth and charm, while windows on both sides let in the morning light and the sound of birdsong. A perfect perch to dream, read, or simply slow down.
The Casita – Detached Guest Bedroom
Just steps from the main house, this little outbuilding is full of soul. Once a writer’s cottage, now a dreamy guest retreat, the Casita features a full bed, a cozy window nook, and wood-paneled walls that glow in the afternoon light. There's a small desk for journaling or working remotely, and the space stays cool and quiet even on warm days. Surrounded by forest, it offers privacy without feeling far away—ideal for guests who enjoy a bit of solitude or need an early bedtime.
Both the Casita and the upstairs bedroom have workspaces. The upstairs bedroom inside the Schoolhouse has a screen attached with HDMI and USB - C ports.
Outdoors, relax around the fire pit under string lights, explore the property lined with wildflowers and birdhouses, or sip morning coffee on the front porch while the bell from the original schoolhouse gently chimes in the breeze.
Whether you're curled up with a book, birdwatching at dawn, or barbecuing in the garden, The Schoolhouse invites you to reconnect—with nature, with stillness, and with yourself.
Transit can be limited. There is a bus that runs from NYC to Port Jervis. For car services, we always recommend Upstate D-tours.
Heads up!
This retreat is thoughtfully designed for adult guests (and their fur babies). With vintage details, open stairways, and delicate finishes, it’s not ideal for young children. We recommend it for couples, solo travelers, or friends looking for a peaceful, grown-up getaway.
