Inside the residential area of Colle Val d'Elsa is a historic and natural landscape of enormous value thanks to the Elsa River which crosses the Val d'Elsa creating a unique territory. The river creates enchanting corners for hiking and observing: the engineering works for gathering water, the artifical canal system for carrying the water to the city, the caves. A particularly suggestive point is the Diborrato water falls, a 15m jump which is more than 10m deep, a sort of small lake where the locals used to go to cool off. Other places not to miss are the Grotta dell'Orso, the Conchina, the Masso Bianco, the Nicchia and the Spianata dei Falchi, each with its own particularities. This natural richness has been recognized with the institution of a protected area in the River Park of the Upper Val d'Elsa which includes the path of the river from the city of Colle Val d'Elsa which stretches from Ponte Santa Giulia to Ponte di Spugna and includes the Caldane, thermal springs which were known to the Etruscans and Romans.

Yes, Monteriggioni just might be the quintessential walled medieval village in Tuscany. It's small enough to perhaps be called "cute" but you won't catch me using this term.

Monteriggioni began as a border fortress built on a round hill by Sienna against the Florentines. It is famous for the intact defensive structure that held up against repeated Florentine attacks in the 11th century; its 10 meter high walls and 14 towers can still be seen for miles around. Monteriggioni has been featured in movies as a typical medieval village.

The village is slightly elliptical in shape with two gates (a third has been plugged). The major gate tourists will use when coming from the parking lot, Porta Franca, owes its name to the Via Francigena--Monteriggione was a major stop on the pilgrimage trail from Cantebury to Rome. The Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Assunta will offer assistance with housing for modern pilgrims traveling the Francigena pilgrimage route.

Monteriggioni was a sleepy village of farmers and sheep herders as late as the 1960's. Today it exists entirely for tourists and pilgrims. You'll find wine shops, a tasting room, restaurants and hotels in the small village. This is not neccessarily a disadvantage, although some times it's nice to see some locals puttering about once in a while.

Monteriggioni is located in the province of Siena, 14km to the northwest of Siena (54km from Florence). While it can be done as a day trip from Siena, you might be better off staying the night--Monteriggioni is much more evocative when the tourists leave late in the afternoon and you can sit in a courtyard sipping a glass of Chianti. Monteriggioni is surrounded by vineyards, and is known for its wine production.

Isolated, quiet place yet room for improvement

The location is somewhat isolated, with a gravel road that is very uneven leading to the property. The apartment was maintained, spacious, and clean. The pool area was lovely and in good condition, though the surrounding grounds require maintenance and the garden had not been tended for some time, which is a shame as the property is quite nice. However, the owner's two outdoor dogs bark frequently at night, disrupting your sleep. The owner speaks limited English but is very friendly and helpful.

Expérience très chouette, lieu paisible, accueil efficace. Nous aurions souhaité une plus grosse exigence de nos hôtes sur l'état général ainsi que les équipements. La piscine était plutôt froide alors que nous venons de Normandie en France. malgré le manque de tire bouchon, nous avons réussi à ouvrir notre bouteille de vin :)

Svårt att hitta till men väl värt besväret

Att hitta till hotellet var inte så lätt. Adressen gick inte att få fram vare sig på Google eller GPS. Hotellet ligger mitt ute i bushen. Man måste komma från rätt håll för att se vägskylten( text bara på en sida). Vägen upp till hotellet (700 m) tror man inte varken är körbar eller leder till ett hotell. Vi frågade oss fram ( krävde fyra förfrågningar hos lokalbefolkningen innan vi kom rätt). Telefonnumret till hotellet stämde inte så vi kunde inte heller ringa o fråga om vägen. Väl framme var det ett litet paradis, härligt med tre pooler att svalka sig i o ett fantastiskt ställe om man är flera familjer som vill semestra ihop. Åker gärna tillbaka nu när vi hittar dit.
