"Positives - friendly welcome, decor and grounds are lovely, decent room in original building , enjoyed the spa facilities. However, our stay was spoiled by our experience in Charlie’s restaurant. The tables are far too close together - we could hear every word spoken at both tables either side of us. Despite sections of restaurant being quieter, staff were seating everyone in same area. Breakfast was even worse - I was sat on bench style seating where two cushions joined so very uncomfortable. I had to get up and find a waiter to take our order for hot food and the omelette when it finally served looked like a dog’s dinner . I don’t often write poor reviews but left with no choice as front desk staff were disinterested when I shared experience. We had come away for a relaxing night after receiving bad news but were left disappointed. The restaurant is not the standard of a 5 star hotel."

"I rarely leave negative reviews for independent B&Bs, but this stay was extremely disappointing. The room I was allocated was not the room type I had booked. It was advertised as a double room but was actually two single beds pushed together, leaving an uncomfortable gap between them. The room itself had several maintenance issues. There was a bad smell coming from the drain, the TV lost signal for most of our stay, the blind was broken and permanently stuck open, and the ground-floor window was broken and could be opened from outside, creating a genuine security concern. What made the experience particularly frustrating was the complete lack of staff presence. I reported the issues on the first morning and was told someone would get back to me. Nobody ever did. No one inspected the room, offered an alternative, or even provided an update. In fact, staff were so absent that we only saw someone a couple of times during the entire stay. The whole place had a strange atmosphere because there was rarely anybody around. There is supposedly a bar and kitchen on site, but these might as well not exist if there is nobody available to serve guests or assist with problems. I appreciate that maintenance issues can happen, but ignoring guests when those issues are reported is not acceptable. The lack of customer service, combined with the poor condition of the room, meant this was not an enjoyable stay and certainly not good value for money."

Battlesteads Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"We had a lovely stay here. Our room was a good size, as was the bathroom, including a jacuzzi bath. We enjoyed the little extras, such as fruit and cookies and bottled water. The bed was really comfortable and we had everything we needed. The hotel is in a good location to enjoy Hadrians wall and the roman forts, also the Sycamore Gap walk. The food and service at breakfast and dinner was very good. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. There is also a star gazing observatory on site, which we have enjoyed on a previous visit."

Balcary House Hotel

8/10 Good

"We had a beautiful quiet room overlooking the gardens. Breakfast was good - items such as eggs and tomatoes were fresh cooked and hot; meat products were sometimes lukewarm. Service was good. Just a bit disappointed that there was no availability of meals/dinner in the evening- a light lunch was available until 6pm. Would help residents to know this beforehand but that might put off people booking. Monday night was difficult with most eateries closed and we could only find a run of the mill Wetherspoons."
