Visit this impressive 18th-century building to see rotating exhibitions from local, national and international artists or to enjoy its café and library.

Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) is an art and cultural center celebrating artists from Scotland and all over the world. Its temporary exhibitions are spread over three floors and cover a wide range of art forms from photography and sculpture, to prints and paintings. Enjoy a coffee in the café or browse the library basement for inspiring design and art books.Originally the mansion of an affluent Scottish tobacco merchant, the present GoMA building changed hands between the Royal Bank of Scotland and Royal Exchange before becoming a museum in 1996. Before you enter, admire the building’s neo-classical architecture. The gallery’s Corinthian pillars, mosaic facade and domed tower offer good photo opportunities. Once inside, you have to ask permission to take photos, which is usually allowed if you don’t use a tripod and flash. Collect a floor plan at reception and set out on a self-guided tour. Check the GoMA website for the calendar of upcoming exhibits and events. Because the exhibitions are ever-changing, you can visit often and see something new every single time. Past exhibitors included the acclaimed Scottish sculptor Karla Black. She famously used 34,000 pounds (17 tonnes) of sawdust to create a mattress-like sculpture. The gallery is known for choosing thought-provoking displays. GoMA has also attracted works by international legends, such as the American artist Andy Warhol. The gallery is also a major venue during the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art. During the Saturday Art Club, GoMA invites children aged 3-12 to attend workshops. Young aspiring artists will love experimenting with various painting techniques. Sometimes exhibiting artists give talks on their work. These presentations are aimed at adults and children alike. Situated in Royal Exchange Square, the Gallery of Modern Art is in the heart of Glasgow’s city center. George Square is within easy walking distance. The gallery is open daily, and admission and internet access are free. Guided tours are available, but must be booked ahead.
