This striking castle located high on a mountain hosts a fascinating museum and is the perfect destination for a family day out.

A trip to historic Granitz Hunting Lodge is a wonderful way to fill a day of your vacation. Not only is the castle a remarkable example of early-to-mid 19th-century architecture, it also houses a highly modern and well-maintained museum. Come on a sunny day to explore the surrounding countryside and make the most of the spectacular views from all around the castle.

The hunting lodge stands on a 348-foot (106-meter) hill, enhancing its dramatic appearance. Records of a hunting lodge of some kind in this spot go back many hundreds of years, but the current lodge was built in the 1830s. It was the idea of the Prussian Prince, William Malte I. His family continued to own the lodge right up until 1945. Visit nowadays and you will find its rooms filled not with lavish personal belongings but with museum artifacts. Much of the furniture and other items on display are drawn from 19th century. However, most of the original belongings of the former noble residents are no longer housed here.

If you have kids, make sure you bring them when you visit the castle, as they are sure to love it. Watch them learn about the past through fun, interactive exhibits. Encourage them to make the climb up to the top of the 125-foot (38-meter) central tower. The views from the platform at the top are wonderful.

Check if any special events will be on at the time of your visit. Events for people of all ages take place here throughout the year. Expect adventures like night-time hikes, guided nature walks and classical music concerts held in the splendid Marble Hall. Guided tours of the castle’s interior are also available.

Note that the opening hours for Granitz Hunting Lodge vary by the season. There is an entrance fee for adults, but children enter for free. Catch the Jagdschlossexpress shuttle bus from the pier at Binz to reach the castle quickly and easily.
