On the lake’s opposite side is the Coeur d’Alene section of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, great for hiking and snowmobiling. In these lovely surroundings, participate in area athletic events, from fun runs to a full marathon, a sprint triathlon and the Coeur d’Alene ironman triathlon.

Hayden’s community parks offer boating, swimming, field sports and picnic areas. Swim, fish or boat in Hayden Lake at Honeysuckle Beach, which has lifeguards from June through August. Play or watch basketball, baseball, soccer or horseshoes at Croffoot Park and Sports Complex. Take kids to the Triple Play Family Fun Park and Raptor Reef Water Park or Silverwood Theme Park for hours of family fun.

In nearby Athol, visit Farragut State Park, a 4,000-acre (1,600-hectare) recreation area with hiking and hundreds of camping sites. Test your outdoor skills on the same territory where the U.S. Navy trained for World War II.
