Mill Batch Cottage is an 18th century holiday cottage, situated on the edge of the village of Mark, situated in the heart of the famous Somerset Levels, and in the shadow of the Mendip Hills. It was originally built as a cattle barn sometime in the 1780s, but in 1819 it was converted into a cottage by William Counsell - hence the inscription ’WC 1819’ on the outside, and ’WC’ above the old fireplace, which often amuses visitors!
The property has been refurbished in 2019 with new furniture and appliances, but still retains many of the original features, the low wooden beam over the front entrance, oak beamed ceiling, and the original fireplace, now with a wood burner for extra cosiness. The name Mill Batch (shared with the owner’s home, adjacent to the cottage) comes from the fact that the property is about fifty feet above sea level (high for the Somerset Levels!). This makes it the ideal place for a windmill, and one was built here in the early 18th century. The lane next to the property leads to the Hamlet of Perry, named after pear cider, which would have been made there. Cider apple trees still run alongside the property and in the orchard next door. Sheep often graze here, wandering amongst the dappled light. The garden of the cottage, though small, borders the owners much larger garden, 1.4 acres. Both are packed with wildlife, as are the surrounding areas, including the Avalon Marshes, Mark village has a fine 16th century church, village stores and two pubs both serving food. Shop ½ mile, pub ¼ mile.

We really enjoyed our stay at Mill Batch Cottage. The cottage is exactly as described and was warm and cosy and very comfortable. It had everything you might need for your stay and a lovely garden. It’s really well located for the surrounding towns and villages - we visited Cheddar, Glastonbury, Wedmore and Tyntesfield during our short break. Would happily return.
We had a lovely few days stay. Everything you need is in the kitchen, even as far as washing powder. The cottage is old so the stairs creak a bit but thats only to be expected. Beds comfortable as well as the sofas.
It is a dog friendly cottage even supplying the dog bowls. The only thing we found is you have to drive to the beach to walk the dog as we didnt feel comfortable walking along the lanes.
A pleasant short break.
Very warm and cosy cottage with comfortable beds and furniture throughout.
A lovely kind gesture of some fresh scones, cream and jam upon our arrival.
Thank you.

Property and owners lovely. Comfy and quirky. Good communication from them. Very poor communication from letting agents though when I tried ringing them.

Only very small complaints were that the pillows were pretty thin and a little tidying up of the Patio are would so improve the welcoming image

Lovely quaint cottage but deceptively large in a great little village with great pubs serving delicious food. Location ideal to explore somerset. Only drawback was the wifi, very poor, so if you rely on the internet, do all your searches when you have 3 or 4G as the wifi is very haphazard to say the least.
Cottage was clean but spiders and webs were aplenty probably because of its rural setting. Stairs have no carpets so are slippery underfoot, be careful, they are also noisy and steep. Kitchen is adequate but no extractor fan, pans are not nonstick either.
Would recommend because of location and availability of excellent food in the village and surrounding pubs.

Lovely cottage.
Lovely cottage... We always try to go for an older, quirky property, and this cottage was perfect. Warm and cosy... And loved the added log burner which we lit each evening. Comfy beds, well equipped kitchen and deceptively spacious rooms. Good location for visits to Street, Bristol, Cribbs, Taunton and Weston. We enjoyed our stay... Wished we had been able to stay longer... It even stopped raining !

Friendly warm welcome and lovely clean and comfortable accommodation.
Nice original features. Double room rather small. Did not expect so close to owners building, heard comings and goings. Fast road sometimes noisy. Gate to Perry Lane not suitable for small dogs but just needs further fencing. Enjoyed our short stay.

We really enjoyed a short break at Millbatch. A great location for exploring Cheddar and surrounding area and the coast at Burnham. The local pubs were excellent and we had a lovely meal at the Whitehorse while we were there. The cottage was cosy and but spacious and we had a great welcome from Stephen on arrival - with scones delivered too! Will visit again and highly recommend.
