In central France, Ile-de-France stands out for its dedication to art, history and culture. This is the very heart of France, a place where famous writers and artists gathered to be inspired by the beauty of life. Wander down busy city streets, see world-famous artworks in person and observe the world go by from sidewalk terraces.
Ile-de-France is the most densely populated French region and is the French hub for business and industry. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations, which gives it a distinctly international sensibility. Get acquainted with the French capital, Paris, which is not only the bustling hub of the entire country but is also the starting point for the latest global fashion, culinary and cultural trends.
There is an endless supply of things to see and do in Paris. Climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower and marvel at the “City of Lights” by night. Stroll across the Pont Neuf bridge and window-shop on Champs d’Elysses. Study the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, an art museum often touted as being the best in the world. If hunger strikes, duck into a café for coffee and a croque-monsieur (a toasted ham and cheese sandwich).
To the southwest of Paris is Versailles, a suburb that once served as the political capital. Grand chandeliers hang in the halls of the Palace of Versailles, Louis XIV’s opulent royal complex. International tourists flock to Seine-et-Marne every year to be entertained at Disneyland Paris. If you prefer natural activities, embark on a walk through the Fontainebleau forest or journey through the Grand Morin valley.
Two international airports serve Ile-de-France: Charles de Gaulle Airport and Orly Airport. Buses and regional train networks can get you to central Paris from both airports. Explore the surrounding areas such as Melun, Meaux or Cergy by renting a car. Ile-de-France enjoys a moderate climate year round with particularly pleasant temperatures in the autumn and spring.
Fall in love with the historic museums in Paris, the extravagance of Versailles and the oft-overlooked natural delights of Ile-de-France.
