Wonderful hotel with a delightful owner and manager. Warm and cozy bar-restaurant with great full-course meals, a nice deck to soak in the sun, and walkable (20 min) to the terrace and forest reserve. Beautiful location in autumn.

Enjoyed our stay with Wellies, truly a rare and delightful gem in Karuizawa. Chris, Judy, and the rest of staff were very kind and a accommodating, the food was excellent, and the vibe of the place was warm and genial. Chris has an excellent music collection that really brightened our day and made us feel nostalgic. Highly recommended!

Easy parking on sight, fresh eggs taken straight from the chickens at the hotel, Chris is an amazing host and cook. My wife and I loved every moment there, we would easily stay again if we go back to Karuizawa.

Hotel Wellies is a great find in Karuizawa! Everything about our stay was outstanding- the room was clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated; the full English breakfast was delicious (kids got to pick the eggs at the chicken coop in the morning); the location was great, close to Hoshino area with onsens; Chris, the owner, was so nice, welcoming and helpful. The inn dog, Freddie, totally won our heart ❤️ I highly recommend Hotel Wellies!!

We stayed for a long weekend at Hotel Wellies and it was exceptional. Chris and Judy made us feel at home from the first moment, and Freddie (the dog) was always around to great us! The food was excellent and served with a lovely view, and as an added bonus we got to help Chris collect the eggs for our full English! Chris was kind enough to give us rides to several places and thus avoid a lot of rain as well. Though the walk from the station is pleasant and not long if you need to do it. Our stay was exceptional and we'll definitely be back to visit Chris and all the staff again. Highly recommended!

Chris, the owner was awesome. We were birdwatching and he took us out in his own car to areas he knew about that he didn't. Super nice person. Breakfast was also great and he made a special additional order of scrambled eggs for my son. He definitely went the extra mile - literally!

Thank you so much for staying with your son. I really enjoyed going out bird watching with you. We have bird feeders and a lot of species in our garden and can also do tours to see Green Pheasants and others and search for the elusive Copper Pheasant.

Comfortable boutique hotel
I stayed for 2 nights at Hotel Wellies in Dec 2019. Hotel is located few minutes drive from Naka Karuizawa station, pick up and drop off to the station were offered by the hotel. The area is very quiet, perfect for good night sleep. The room’s very spacious (much bigger than average hotel in Japan), super clean and comfortable with the charm of English countryside. You can sit by the fireplace with tea and cookies during snowy winter night, bliss. Delicious breakfast and very filling. Impeccable service from Chris and the team. Chris took me and other guests to see beautiful Christmas lights around the area. He also picked me up when I got stranded. I would definitely recommend Hotel Wellies if you’re staying in Karuizawa.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. I am an American living in Tokyo and was attracted to this lace because it seemed a little different. Exceeded all expectations! Our room was spacious and beautiful, and the common-room/lounge was warm and welcoming. Breakfast happened to be included in our reservation and it was delicious. After spending the day hiking we were able to unwind with drinks and great conversation with guests and staff. Outstanding service, friendly service. I can go on and on but I already this review is too long.

Hotel Wellies is a winner!
Hotel Wellies is great place to stay. My husband and I spent three nights here in June, 2019 and had a wonderful experience. Chris was a warm, funny, attentive host who made us feel right at home. From the moment we were picked up at the Karuizawa train station, to our check-in with Judy - who is full of smiles and laughs - to our delicious requested vegetarian dinners, we felt very well-cared for. And we can't forget Freddie - the large and gentle poodle that loves his perch in the lobby. The hotel itself is well-situated and offers all the amenities needed for a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

Great hotel close to nature, birding, and food! LOCATION: We spent two nights here in late May. The location is great. The hotel is just a 20-minute walk from the Karuizawa Wild Bird Forest, one of the top birding spots in Japan. We had the forest to ourselves and also saw tons of birds right next to the hotel. The forest itself is next to Harunire Terrace, which has amazing food and shops (try Il Sogno). There is a lovely temple and cemetery down the street from the hotel where we got some great pics. HOTEL: Our room was clean and quiet with a private bathroom. There is also a big deck and garden with flowers, bird boxes, and a feeder. Chris, the owner, was so accomodating and fun to talk to. He picked us up from Karuizawa station and helped us navigate the area. Since this was our first visit to Japan and we only had a few days, it was nice to be able to talk to someone in English. Would definitely stay again!

A stylist British inn in Karuizawa
Staying in the Hotel Wellies is one of the exceptional experiences among my Japan tour. You can have a really British atmosphere at one time but then a beautiful Japanese scenery and cuisine when you walk out of its gate. I would also like to thank Chris, the host of Wellies for giving me an enjoyable British breakfast and telling me lot of tips in touring around Karuizawa. He even took us to a local cafe to have a Jazz night with local musicians. I certainly will come back when I visit Karuizawa in a different season.

Quintessentiallly British-style hotel
We had a splendid stay at Wellies. Managed by a British owner, Chris, the setting of the hotel is of very classic British style. Chris was a super nice host fixing schedule with us everyday and driving us in and out. he’s also a genius cook. The dinner at Wellies was a big surprise for us - it’s British style set course tailor-made by Chris. I would highly recommend a go for the food and wine here as they are both absolutely fantastic. You can definitely taste the passoon therein.

Feels like home
Stay; Oct/14-15, 2017 / Rm 206 Felt comfortable from the first moment. The owner had contacted me a few days before I arrived, asking if I needed any info or Karuizawa. So when I arrived, the conversation picked up where we'd left off, making the place feel more comfortable and homelike. The ground floor feels more like a home than a hotel, with views to the backyard and a wood stove in the corner for cold days. Was greeted on arrival with a hot cup of tea and easy conversation with lots of information about the town. The room was large, clean, well appointed, large bath/shower. A sitting area separate from the bed with views to the gazebo in the back yard was pleasant. Very comfortable. In the morning, breakfast was a traditional English breakfast, sausage, eggs, beans, tomato and an English muffin with coffee or tea. An easy comfortable environment. A two hour drive from Tokyo, I'm looking forward to returning.

A unique British experience in the heart of Japan
The owner Chris is a very hospitable and caring host, knowledgeable about the area and always going to he extra mile to make the difference to our stay. Chris has lovingly re-created a part of Britain in Karuizawa from the decor to the food and the music. As an expat living in Japan it was a refreshing 'escape' that was only 1 hour from Tokyo. Would definitely repeat the experience.

A fantastic stay in Karuizawa
A two-night stay at Hotel Wellies is absolutely awesome! It is rare to have a British-style hotel in Japan. The room is comfortable and the English breakfast is nicely served. The staff are really friendly and helpful. If Chris, the owner of the hotel, is free (usually in the morning), he will take you around the town, which saves a lot of time waiting buses or train.

Thanks for your kind review, glad you liked the food and rooms. Yes, if we are not busy, we try to help people get around town as Karuizawa is quite spread out. If the weather is fine, then bicycles are the best. Public transport is not great!

2回目の宿泊となります。前回は、2年前の同日の宿泊でしたが、今回はオーナー以外の従業員の方が変わられていたようです。今回は日本人の方も1名おりました。前回は全員外国の方でした。 宿泊者も、前回は皆日本人でしたが、今回は私たち以外は外国の方でした。外国の方にも知れてきたんでしょうか？ プチホテルのような感じで、館内は非常に清掃が行き届いておりきれいでした。もちろん部屋も、部屋内のトイレ・バスもきれいでした。 ペンションと考えると、少しお高めだと思いますが、あくまでホテルということなので、そんな感じかなと思います。

この度はご宿泊頂きまして誠にありがとうございます。 コロナ期間中、外国人ゲストはほぼゼロでした。 コロナ後、さらに多くの外国人が日本を訪れるようになりました。 ゲストの割合は日本人が7割、外国人が3割くらいです。 しかし、時期によっては日本人が旅行に行かなくなり、外国人の割合が増えます。 当店は外国風ホテルです！ 当ホテルは非常に小さく、わずか9部屋のペンションサイズです。 弊社スタッフは約60％が外国人、約40％が日本人で、外国人のほとんどが日本語を話します。 しかし、私たちは自分たちをペンションではなく、ブティックホテルだと考えています。 私たちは安さを目指すのではなく、最終的には良い価値を提供したいと考えていますThank you for staying again and your kind words. During Covid we had almost zero foreign guests. After Covid, many more foreigners are visiting Japan. Our guest split is around 70% Japanese, and 30% foreigners. However, at certain times Japanese do not travel and the percentage of foreigners increases. We are a foreign style hotel! We are quite small, sop pension size with only 9 rooms. But we think of ourselves as a boutique hotel, not a pension. We do not aim to be cheap, but hope that we offer good value in the end.

静かな環境で落ち着きます。ガーデンが素敵ですね。レストランは徒歩圏内、コンビニは約18分。住宅街の中で、暗くなるとわかりにくいので、明るいうちにホテルに着くようにするといいでしょう。一度、場所がわかれば便利なところかな。

軽井沢に来たら再訪したい！
2人で宿泊しました。部屋がとても広く、清掃が行き届いていて快適でした。ソファがあり、部屋の中で軽食などを食べる際に便利でした。スタッフの方がとてもフレンドリーで毎日楽しかったです。軽井沢を訪れた際には、ぜひまたこちらに泊まりたいです！

チェックインの予定時間を事前に知らせといた方が良いかと思われます。オーナーの人柄がとても良く、ホテルに泊まるというよりはアットホームなペンションという感じです。看板犬のフレディがあちこち彷徨いているので、犬が苦手な方にはオススメできません。のんびりくつろぐのにはとても良いと思います。

호텔닷컴에서 평점이 좋아서 예약했는데, 역쉬 청결한 호텔 내부와 친절하신 직원분(특히, 사장님)들 덕분에 편안한 숙박이었습니다. 엄선된 재료들도 만들어주시는 조식도 엄청 맛있었고, 특히 닭장에서 계란을 직접꺼내는 체험도 하고,내가 꺼낸 계란으로 만들어주신 계란후라이는 정말 맛있습니다. 카루이자와 여행 계획하시는 분들은 꼭 한번 들러보세요!
