A sunrise balloon ride over Bagan might seem touristy, but the views are incredible. The sheer number of temples dotting the landscape is difficult to appreciate from ground level. I wasn't prepared to be so wowed, but I have to put Bagan up there with Machu Picchu and Angkor Wat - two of my favorite places.

Standing 240 metres above the city of Mandalay, Mandalay Hill offers amazing panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside.

At the top of Mandalay Hill is Su Taung Pyae Pagoda, a major pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists for nearly two centuries.

With polished marble floors, mosaic-embedded archways and glistening gold stupas rising up towards a perfect cloud-brushed sky, this place was pretty spectacular even without the views. But add those into the equation and you’ve got somewhere worth making a brief stop in Mandalay for.

Monks are ever-present in Southeast Asia, adorned in robes of various shades which differ from country to country. The rich hues of the fabric provide a colorful contrast to their background, as here, in dusty Old Bagan, Myanmar.
