Step into a beautifully ordered formal garden in the heart of Leon and wander around a tranquil, green space framed by a historic square.

The Martyrs Plaza, also known as the Plaza Principal, is an unexpected and delightful sight in the center of Leon. The busy industrial city sprawls out from a charming Historic Center. Stroll around this old quarter of Leon to encounter a stunning green garden that features bulbous trees, tall hedges and an elegant gazebo. Stop for a break in this pleasant setting with the twin spires of the Basilica Cathedral in the background.

This square was originally known as Plaza de la Constitución but was renamed the Martyrs Plaza of January 2 in honor of political dissidents who died on that date in 1946. Several local residents protested the results of an election and were subsequently killed by the troops of General Bonifacio Salinas, simply for registering their complaints. Today, appreciate the square’s role as a symbol of peace in the heart of the city.

Wander beneath the immaculately shaped trees that grow in gumdrop and cubic mounds around the garden. Benches line the walkways so locals and visitors can enjoy the shade beneath the tall hedges at the edges of the square. Sit at the gazebo in the center of the garden and watch people pass by.

Explore the edges of the square, which are lined with historic buildings, street performers and vendors. Banks, accommodations and restaurants occupy the buildings surrounding the garden. Glance around the area to find an old church bell tower and the pink-stone municipal offices.

Wander around the surrounding area to discover the Historic Center of Leon. Admire the two spires of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Light. Step behind it to explore the Museum of Sacred Art. Get out your camera for other attractions, such as the Manuel Doblado Theater, built in 1880, and the Fountain of Lions.

Martyrs Plaza is located in central Leon, within walking distance of other attractions in the city. Stroll for just over 10 minutes from the Templo Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus to reach the square.
