"Our stay at the Ryokan Tsuchi to Ito was nothing short of a dream. The ryokan itself is beautiful with gorgeous details and comfort in every corner. The host, Kimi, went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and cared for, and provided wonderful recommendations as we spent our days exploring Nagano. The food is absolutely exceptional, and you can tell they take great pride in the food they grow and Kimi’s mom is an incredible cook. We will never forget our stay, and enthusiastically recommend...

Top Matsumoto Hotel Reviews

Hotel Matsumoto Yorozuya

8/10 Good

"This is a quality hotel. It is more utilitarian. It is not a high end hotel but it doesn’t pretend to be."

Nunoya Ryokan

10/10 Excellent

"Very charming ryokan! Stayed with our older children and wished we had more time here. The staff were above and beyond helpful when my teenager left a number of items behind - thank you! The lounge was a nice space to relax in and enjoy the complimentary tea/coffee in the morning and evening. Located on a picturesque street, with a lot of food/shopping nearby and it was an easy walk from the train station. The property is very clear about the age of the building etc - so watch out if you have difficulty with stairs."

Onsen Lodge Watari

10/10 Excellent

"This place had the feel of a "best-kept-secret"; gem-of-a-find type place. Everything about staying there was fascinating. As the management, to their credit, explicitly warns on their listings, the structure is old and rustic. But this wasn't a deterrent in any way, it adds to the charm and they do an excellent job keeping it clean, well maintained and accommodating. As a westerner looking to explore some backwaters parts of Japan and stay in a traditional Onsen ryokan that is not a tourist trap, this was the perfect best-of-both-worlds fit. The manager spoke good English and was helpful so that there was no confusion or culture shock, but none of the authenticity was compromised. I would certainly stay there again, even go out of my way again - drive up to the mountains - in order to stay there if overnighting en route to or from Tokyo southward."
